3 Delta 1010s -- Anyone really doing it?

tmrpro wrote on 6/8/2003, 11:06 AM
I was wondering if anyone out there is using 3 or more Delta 1010s with V4 using ASIO. If so, here are some questions:

1. Has anyone actually recorded 16 or more individual (mono) tracks at one time for 5 or more minutes using these cards?

2. Have you set up an output bussing configuration that bussed 16 or more individual (mono) tracks to individual outputs on your multi-card configuration?

3. Was the multi channel monitoring set up as described in "question # 2" when you were tracking as described in "question # 1"?

If you have done this, please describe the program's success/stability:

...A little info about your machine (CPU, memory, etc.)

& the results (stable, unstable, etc.).

Thanks!

Hey JoeD,

I know you're working with at least 2 1010s and I'd love to ask you some questions regarding performance. If you ever get a chance please contact me with your contact info here:

Im able to pull off 48 channels recording at a time with a pair of RME HDSP9652's and a Western Digital WDJB Jumbo Buffer hard drive at 48khz 24 bit, but things get funny

24 tracks no problem

Sorry I don't visit here as often as others.

Yes, I've had 3 delta 1010's connected having borrowed a third delta 1010 for a spot project....but it was V3 and in no way would I use ASIO - you want to use the MME with Win XP (which at that time was the delta .27 xp driver).
I see little to no reason using the ASIO drivers in vegas.

It was on a pretty stipped system with only a vid card and U320 (all coms, USB disabled. No Nic, No modems, no cheapo soundcards, etc...stripped for DAW use. I say this because I still prefer the hardware on it's own IRQ - so do a standard install of XP.

The deltas synced via spdif again (professional for spdif output format), card 1 out to card 2 spdif in, card to out to spdif in on card 3. Card 1 set to internal\xtal, card 2 and 3 set to spdif in in master clock. Set to mon mixer in the patchbay\router, projects set at 24\44.1, multiple card sync for all 3, my buffer still set at 384 (with .27 and the driver I use now 5.10.00.0029x12).

The system was beefy enough (even though you can go even faster P4 today). It was a 1.6A oc'd to 2.4 ghz, epox 4BDA mobo, 512 stick pc-2700 samsung mem oc'd at 400 mhz, two scsi U320 drives (os and record to drive), cdrw, and 2 maxtor fast ide.
* depending on the track count upon record, I think fast ide can get sluggish which is why people probably claim as such.

answer to your q's:

1. Yes, all day long (more than 5 minutes), but using V3, XP (avoid w2k and it's I\O limits), and delta MME (not ASIO).

2. buss for each mic? Hell no. A buss for each instument, and it's set to mon. mixer in delta panel.

3. Monitoring (even if you have 1 soundcard) should be done via a hardware mixer. I still advise this route today.

Get a delta with a return policy and test it out yourself (gtr center has a decent return policy). I still choose V3 over V4 at this point - please note this.

Hey JoeD,

Thanks for your input!

I've been using multiple 1010s already. I love the way they sound more than anything else I've ever used ...I've used everything out there.

I do not track in Vegas yet and will not until Auto Input is happening.

Here's the type of systems I build and what we're currently using (I have about 5 of these machines with minor variations):

2.4 or higher P4 Rambus or Xeon (no increase on V-Core)
no less than 1g of ram
XP Home/SP1 + optimized for audio
Boot & Write to 15k RPM Seagate SCSI
IDE carrier for backup
Onboard ethernet for LAN - using GigaStudio and MX2424

I primarily wanted to understand your reasoning behind not using ASIO. I know you are using softsynth from your previous posts, but is there something that isn't cool with ASIO?

Also, I'm not sure that you understood Q#2. Please let me reiterate:

I do not want to buss a mic or instrument. I want to buss the output of the armed record track to an individual output on the 1010s and use "Auto Input" when it is implemented in Vegas (should this happen in the near future).

I want to use outboard hardware monitoring with this application, but I want to be using the application's bussing configuration to output individual tracks to individual output channels on the 1010s.

Your answer to Q#3 is precisely the way I intend on monitoring when I'm tracking.

Let me say that I have only used Vegas to mix with. I did play around with V3 and experienced some limitations concerning number of tracks and number of DX plugs. It wasn't until V4 that I was actually able to mix many tracks with multiple DX plugs and be happy enough with the mix to use it for that particular record. I was using ASIO for that setup. Anyway, I totally appreciate your input and I would love to talk to you briefly with my nickel on the telephone.

If you wouldn't mind, please view the post in this series with your name in the title and it has a link to send me an email.

tmpro, so apparently you have compared the 1010s to the Layla 24. I'd be curious as to what makes the 1010 *sound* better than the Layla? If this is true, then obviously it would have to do with the converters but I'm more interested in your impressions about the sonic differences.

Thanks,

I just really like the way that the Deltas sound.

The reproduction in midrange is awesome to my ears.

I think you would love the way they reproduce your drum sounds.

I do like the ECHO products as well. I just like the M-Audio Delta a lot better.
