30 second VOB files - corrupt files?

alexz wrote on 9/11/2005, 4:37 PM
Hi,
I've got a dvd of old family 8mm film clips and i want to improve the image quality. Problem is, the VOB files on the DVD play fine on a dvd, but in vegas (and other software) they show up as strange 30-second clips - even though they range from 15 to 25 minutes. I want to import them to vegas then render to AVI before I start the cleaing process. Does anyone maybe have an idea what could be wrong with these files, or a way to extract them to AVI?

thanks.

Struck this problem many times, they were most likely made using a STB DVD recorder and contain wierd data block. Womble seems to open them correctly. Just get it to restream them and then Vegas will read them correctly.

AUD 139, yes it's from down under. I've only trialled it on one project but seems to work very well indeed, certainly just one project where you really need it would pay for it, you do get a 15 day trial so nothing to loose. The GUI is a bit arcane but we're an oddball bunch down here and I've certainly struck much harder things to get the brain around.
Possibly for what you're doing Womble might be all you need.
Bob.

Although I suppose it must be about lunchtime there?

You can use Womble, which is an excellent product and useful for joining MPEG-2 files as well. However, you may be able to simply strip out the video from the VOB stream and that may solve your problem. This process is called "demultiplexing." You will have to do this anyway in order to get the audio to play. TMPGEnc is a software program that does many things. In the File menu you will find "MPEG tools" and in those tools you will find the demultiplexer that will let you split out the video and audio from your VOB file. The main reason Vegas chokes on the VOB file is that it contains video, multiple audio tracks, multiple subtitle tracks, and navigation logic. All Vegas wants to see is just a single video stream and nothing else.

Here's the TMPGEnc download link:

I tried Womble Yesterday, and it worked a treat - thanks again for the tip. But since it's something I don't use often, I don't know if I'll go for the upgrade and maybe I'll try TMPGEnc. I think I've even downloaded it before.

If TMPGEnc doesn't work, and you don't want to pay $$ for Womble's products, let me know and I'll see if I can come up with another alternative. I think TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools will work, but you never know.

John, wouldn't this require the paid version of TMPGenc in order to work with mpeg-2?

Dear VUs,
I have another question - also related to MPEG2 files:
I noticed that the video was very jittery and still frames flickered with play paused. After much fiddling around, I noticed that with the field set to 'upper field first' the problem disappeared. Is this something I need to correct by re-rendering, or is it normal that MPEGs have upper field first?
thanks.

I get great quality from my sonyDVD403 camcorder when I play directly on my dvd player.

I use vegas import from camcorder disk feature which works great at bringing the VOB file into timeline.

Unfortunately, the quality is significantly worse than the original. I wonder if the "uper fieled first' setting is a factor. Seems just lower resolution/more pixely than the original.

I opened ticket with sony support and have not found solution with them yet.
