32 vs 64 bit comparison if you want it

I have installed on both 32 and 64 bit (on same system, dual boot method). Previously (and still installed) Vegas 7e [on both].

Installed v8 on both - no problems.

The crunch time - performance differences.. Using a pure multiple generated media test project file (the same on project on both "systems") with same render settings etc.
Render time for 32bit. 3m02s
Render time for 64bit. 3m02s.
Result: Suprise for some perhaps, less so for others.

The benefit to me: 64bit handles more memory - so Vegas is effectively using up less of my RAM (as a %, not allocation in MB before anyone starts... - 32bit ran up to 73%, 64bit went to 67%). Both were running CPU at 100% for the whole render time.

HTH some people looking for a comparison

Kenny,
you must test with AT LEAST the 5 most used encoders that Vegas comes with to make a decision. You see, the render times are different for each encoder, and each licensed encoder behaves DIFFERENTLY on 64bit and 32bit systems. So while you might get an encoder that has no difference between 32bit and 64bit, another one might be slower or faster. So, try the most 4-5 most used encoders that come with Vegas first...

Are you comparing 32-bit Vegas to 64-bit Vegas? Or 32 Windows to 64-bit Windows?

Unless you are comparing 32-bit Vegas to 64-bit Vegas, I would not expect there to be any significant difference in performance. The benefit comes when Vegas is (finally) entirely re-written in 64-bit, and of course even more optimized to fully utilize quad core and dual quad-core CPU's.

The 64-bit and multi-core issues are not just Sony's problem though. Rendering and encoding require re-written and optimized codecs/decoders/encoders as well. Only 64 bit WMV is there so far I think. Vegas does not write most of these, so do not expect a better world until the rest get with the times!

@Wes :Comparing 32bit to 32 under WoW in 64bit. (I don't have a 64native version to test yet afterall...)

@Eugenia - name the codecs you want me to test, and I shall do them if you want me to.

This was not intended to be an out-and-out performance comparison, but a heads up primarily for those who might have been expecting something amazing to happen under 64bit (especially for those not familiar with the way Sony does some nifty 32bit oversampling).

It was also a quick info guide to those who wonder if there were any major performance hits from running it under WoW. I realise that more codec tests would be wanted anyway, but this all takes time.

These postings were not for my benefit either - I'm quite aware of the potential and realistic performance differences between 32 and 64 nativity.
