32bit and 64bit for Vegas

Richard Jones wrote on 11/19/2010, 5:47 AM
I've just bought a new computer whiuch has Windows7 64bit installed.

I know Vegas (i'm using version 8c) will run on this but also know that some plug-ins are still available only in 32 bit. Other contributors have referred to using Vegas in 32bit as well as in 64bit mode. I know it sounds a basic question (I'm sorry) but how do I make my Windows operate in 32bit mode and is this interchangeable at will when I'm using something other than Vegas?

Install both the 32 bit and 64 bit Vegas Pro on the Windows 7 64 bit OS. Windows will run them both as separate appications. In fact, Windows will install the programs in different folders. It will be up to you to keep track of which version you are using to do each part of your editing workflow.

The OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium most commonly sold by Microsoft to OEM vendors like Dell has been the 64-bit version rather than the 32-bit version. One only has to look at availability to see it. Newegg (one of the largest US vendors) only sells the 64-bit OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium, for example.
Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate are a different story. They are commonly available in both. With W7 Pro or Ultimate you can also downgrade to Windows XP or Vista (until they release W7 Sp1) if you have a previously used XP or Vista OEM COA and Disk. In other words, you can reuse it once until you are ready to go back to Windows 7. However you have to call them on the phone to do it.

New to Vegas and only installed 64bit version. Out of interest does this count as 2 installations? Will Vegas pick up the installed 64bit version via registry and there will be no need to register the 32bit version.

You'll need to register them both - but they only count as one installation because they're installed on the same machine.

Parrallel 32 and 64 bit install on Win7 do not cause any prob at all and allow me to use live Noise reduction when i need it (it's only 32 bit for now).

Just to be clear, we're talking about 32bit and 64bit versions of Vegas, NOT 32 and 64bit versions of Windows. If you have a processor which supports the 64bit version of Windows (and most do), then you should only install the 64bit version of Windows. Then install both the 32 and 64bit versions of Vegas. Most plugins currently work only in the 32bit version of Vegas, but there are an increasing number being released for the 64bit Vegas. You can freely use both versions of Vegas on a single 64bit Windows installation.

Loaded VP(32) and it simply picked up the info provided from the 64bit installation.
Taking things a little further my main pc is dual booted XP or W7 via bios (both systems 32bit). Vegas is installed on W7 whilst pinnacle Avid7v2 is installed under XP. From memory the machine ID is based on hardware (motherboard etc). Would running Vegas under XP be considered as a additional installation as clearly one can only use one copy at a time. My working files are on drives D: & E: whilst the .veg files on on C: or F: depending on which system I'm working on. This is a little OT but there is a mine of information within this forum.

And getting extra installs approved is seldom an issue anyway, with any resonable explanation. And there always seems to be a quick response too.

Many thanks to you all. John Cline's comment about bearing in mind the need t obe clear whether we are talking about Vegas or Windows when we refer to 32 and 64 bit is a very worthwhile reminder.

Anyhow, I've taken the plunge and downladed both versions of Vegas onto my Windowas 7 64 bit OS and shall have a play with them both over the next few days. The most important point I have now to bear in mind is that some Plug Ins are compatible only with Vegas in 32 bit mode. Shall have to learn how to transfer pieces of work back and forth between them so that I can apply the Plug Ins available in one and not the other and bring them all into the one project.

The upgrade to Vegas 10 offer at £89.95 applies only to the end of this month - it's quite a saving if you are interested..
