Hey Lars,

Your looking at something like Boris Red, if you're looking for a plug-in.

however if you just need to export a sequence of images or make a video file with alpha, you could go to something like blender ( a free 3D app that is really quite impressive for the price tag :) ). Otherwise, there's Cinema 4D, Borris Blue, Lightwave, and the list goes on and on.

Bluff Titler can do some quick and easy 3D titles and shapes plus it has a reasonable particle generation for sparkles, smoke, flames, etc. Cheap too and great support. Not a plug in, but video with transparent background is easily imported into vegas. Check out their gallery for many examples... they're a bit flashy but use your imagination and you'll find it can do quite a bit of serious work in resolutions suitable for full HD.

Thanks Jim, a bit of particle generation now and then can never hurt...

If you need to turn 2D logos and the like into 3D then ideally what you need is the logo as an Illustrator file i.e. as paths. If they haven't got that then the next step is to trace it in Illustrator. Regardless there's limitations, the paths must be closed and no bitmaps.
If you've got the above then it's all pretty easy using After Effects Shatter FX (who would have thought of that one!). You can also do it with a number of other programs.
If you don't mind a lot of fiddling around oddly enough you can do it in Bryce which is free. It'll turn a grey scale into a 3D displacement map on a 3D object. Many cool things can be done with this, like text as mountains complete with foliage, well I has having fun, OK. You also get lights and a 3D camera.
Along with Bryce there's Daz Studio, also free and lots of free models that you can animate, render and composite in Vegas. A huge time waster mostly but lots of fun.
Then there's Truespace, also free.

All of the above let you decide if you want to devote the rest of your days to the world of 3D or not, for free.

Bob.
