I don't use 3d max but I use carrara animation software it works great with vegas4 ,(not V5 due to problems I'm having) I create animations or objects which can be rendered down to avi video then imported into vegas ....With animation software you can create you own effects,,,,,,

A lot depends on what you are trying to do. I mean, if you are making animations that are complete in themselves, i.e. backgrounds and all, then render to avi in max and finish in Vegas.

If on the other hand you are camera matching or otherwise compositing video and animation, then the flow would be different.

Describe a bit more what you are doing and I'll try to help. I use 3ds max 6 and Vegas 4, and I DO composite video and animation.

In my case, I usually render out my 3DS Max animation to .PNG frames, and import into Vegas 5, assemble and then render ( PAL DV format).

I used to render to TGA, but Vegas 4 (i currently use Vegas 5) did not appear to like TGA.

Results are excellent.

You can create 3d models in Max and even apply textures on it. Save the model as .3ds file and the textures separate as picture format.
Now use the Vegas plugin Wax. There is a model loader which allows to import 3ds models (inclusive textures if provided separately). Having loaded such a model you can zoom, pan, scale rotate in 3d space (within the plugin Wax). Works great for Vegas 4 and 5 (and I think even Vegas 3). All you need is the Wax plugin (www.debugmode.com).
