just to confirm what i think i remember from previous posts...

running win xp 32.

am running dual 19" monitors for program, and would like to add third (hdmi / dvi?) to monitor picture.

can i simply add another video card (with hdmi out)? any suggest as to card? pref. nvidia

can anyone foresee any problems?

i'll retain my sony hr trinitron (via firewire > component from m15) for colour cc and final appraisal.

Leslie,

I am looking at just this setup for a new system for HD editing. You'll need another card with hdmi/component/dvi out. The trick is finding a card that Vegas likes. From my research, I think an AJA card - one of their many varieties (AJA Xena LH, LHe, LS, or LSe) - would be OK. Thanks to JR for the great info.

I seem to recall, from this forum, support problems with Black Magic cards of various flavours.

hi tom,

i was hoping to throw any 'old' video card in and that vegas would give me the option to select it under preview device settings?

am i wrong in this assumption?

i'm not really interested in investing in any 'serious' card since i'd be happy enough pumping out dvi / hdmi to a hd 22" monitor (probably a cheap benq or the like). it's more to free up my second monitor and do away with switching my sony monitor to 16:9 - as it's interlaced and a bit small on the 4:3 screen

Leslie,

A second el-cheapo card will likely work, but I have no practical experience at this time. As long as Windows sees it, I think you should be able to assign it as a secondary display and Vegas will use that.

My existing setup is much like yours - dual displays and a SONY pro monitor via S-video from a DSR-25 connected by f/w.

Probably your best shot at getting it to work would be using 2 dual output video cards. At least that way there's less opportunity for confusion over drivers etc.
I can't quite see though why 2x 24" monitors would not be more than enough :)

I have an SLi hookup on my editor with two nVidia based dual output cards. I have a gateway 22" hd Display for my video monitor and two 19" lcds for the App. I like it soooo much that I built 7 more at work BUT there I used the nVidia Quadro card but still have three monitors (both setups could be four monitors but even I can't see why I'd want that many!) I don't run the system in SLi mode though, unless I shift to some graphics or animation work as the SLi really kicks those apps up a notch. IMHO

I have been running 2 or more monitors on every desktop I have owned since beta-testing Win98. When chatting the the guy assigned to the video portion of the OS, he told me he had gotten to nine screens with no issues before running out of space for cards. I am now running 4 screens on Vista 64. I am about to hook a 37 inch Vizio 1080p up to the fourth output via DVI to HDMI.

I have found the easiest way to use multiple video cards is to go for the same chipset. Like NVidia 9600. Back in the days I would mix AGP and PCI as long as the chipsets matched. Now with PCIe it seems even easier, again matching chipsets (2 9600's).

Using the same numbered chipsets prevents driver conflicts. Early on I would try to make new card work with an old card, different number chipset. It was a pain causing many crashes and often on initial startup, wouldn't even boot until I removed a card.
