4.0b causes problem with another program

WildBlue wrote on 4/28/2003, 12:27 PM
When I installed 4.0b, I could no longer add MPEG1 video to files created with Multimedia Builder. This problem does not happen with 4.0a. It appears that 4.0b overwrites something that Multimedia Builder needs. It's not a conflict, because when I uninstall 4.0 the problem remains.

The error is one of those "...forced to close..." messages, and includes the "error signature" Modname=mciqtz32.dll, Modver=6.4.2600.0.

My system is WinXP, with all the latest updates, running on AthlonXP1800+, 512 Ram.

As I use both these programs extensively for clients, the need for help is urgent and would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Funny, I used MMB for something and I can get MPEG 1 clips to
play if I do not re-size. If I use MCI commands the MMB
MPEG's will not show up on any computers that are running
VV4b.
Interesting

The file is on my system as well, same version, in Windows System32 folder. Its a Microsoft DLL. Since I have the same exact version of this DLL, it suggests the problem is with Multimedia Builder, not Vegas. Sometimes such problems go away if you just uninstall and reinstall the application generating the error message. I use Microsoft's build-in search for first be sure you don't have multiple copies of this file on your system. It would appear it correctly belongs in the folder I mentioned. Sometimes, multiple copies of DLL's get installed once in the system folder and again in the application's own folder which can cause problems. If you find that's the case, rename the copy not in the system folder and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for your replies. Videoman69, thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one who has experienced this issue, or something similar. And BillyBoy, thanks for the suggestions. I tried looking at what you said. I also tried installing DirectX 9.0 at the suggestion of SF tech support. But I'm still in the same place-- MMB autoruns will not run after 4.0b is installed, if the MMB file contains an MPEG1 video. Very frustrating. Because I'm so dependent on both these programs right now, I'm stuck with using the flawed 4.0a! This is not a long term solution.

As for who's "fault" it is, I'm really not sure. But the fact is, the installation of 4.0b interferes with MMB, so one question is, what is 4.0b installing that could impact MMB MPEGs (and possibly other software as well)?

I had the same problem, re-installed windows media player 9 and everything worked fine in both programs.

You could activate Dr. Watson (part of Windows) and it may give you a clue of what's happening. The idea behind Dr. Watson, is once activated Windows will attempt to capture a snapshot of what it was doing just prior to the application hang. This information is written to a log file which you can view as a text file using Notepad or anything else.

As an example a partal Dr. Watson file follows from a recent "applicatioin crash" I had. First part shows that the application STHVCD.EXE caused the error. Next part shows my system information followed by what was in memory at the time. Next part attempts to show what when wrong. From the dump section it shows 'Unable to verify checksum for C:\SuperDecoder\STHVCD.EXE *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded' That's apparently why the application locked up.

Doing the above should give you a clue if its Vegas or your other application that's causing the problem. How to turn on Dr. Watson varies a little depending on your version of Windows. Do a look up in Windows help for Dr. Watson, if you want to give it a try. Remember that the log file it creates gets appended. So the last event (crash) is always at the bottom.

Thanks Jsnkc for the great idea. Unfortunately, I tried re-installing WMP9 (I re-installed it over the old WMP9, since I couldn't uninstall it), but it didn't fix the problem. I'm assuming you reinstalled after 4.0b was already installed.
WildBlue wrote on 4/28/2003, 7:31 PM
Thanks BillyBoy, I'm going to try this and see if I can provide SF Tech support with some useful information.
Jsnkc wrote on 4/28/2003, 8:12 PM
yeah I did

I've attached a Dr. Watson Log below, as BillyBoy suggested. If anyone can help me make something out of this, I would appreciate it. I know that 4.0b is overwriting something that the CD autorun needs. Thanks.

Wish I could be more help... one thing I've noticed is according to Dr. Watson scanning your system it reports you never installed Microsoft's Service Pack One, which was released about six months or so back. It fixed a whole bunch on Windows bugs there were in the original release. You may want to consider adding Service Pack One at some time. It probably has nothing to due with this problem, and just installing it can introduce other problems. Something to think about. You can learn more about the service packs over at Microsoft's site.

Is this problem caused when your CD drive L starts up? If so, you may want to consider turning off the autorun feature for this drive and see if that changes what happens.

The problem could be as simple as a file share violation, with Vegas and your other application both trying to access the same file at once, which is a no-no.

Have you tried changed the sequence in which you start the two applications? If you started Vegas first, try starting it after the other program is running or the other way around.

FWIW, does the problem occur just on the PC running VV4b? If it performs OK on other systems, perhaps the problem is in the registry, with windows thinking it should be using other programs or files to play your mpg video. If you can open the video in media player, properties (in media player) will tell you which decoder is being used. Perhaps MMB is being told by windows to use the mainconcept decoder when in the earlier versions of Vegas it used the windows media decoder.

If this seems it might be the case, I think I'd try going through the file association dialog in windows explorer to associate your mpeg files with the windows media decoder.

Another thing I might try is setting a restore point in XP with an earlier version of Vegas installed and everything working properly. Then upgrade to 4b, and restore the system to that earlier point. [It wouldn't hurt to do a Zipped file backup of the Vegas4b folder in case something there reverted]

luck
mike

WildBlue, Matt and I are looking into the problem you are having with MMB and 4.0b. Please continue to email Matt as well as posting to this forum.

Let's see if this helps:

-Find the files mcdsmpeg.ax and mcspmpeg.ax.
-Rename these files to mcdsmpeg.ax.hide and mcspmpeg.ax.hide.
-Reboot the PC and try playing back your media again.

Rename them back to their original structure if you run into any troubles.

SonicJD, I just received the same post in an e-mail from Ted Hoch. I renamed the files as you suggested, and IT WORKED! Thanks for paying attention to this, and thanks to the others who posted here. Now I can get back to my usual routine!
