4:3 and 16:9 on same timeline

I was able to use video shot in 4:3 successfully in a 16:9 timeline and smoothly edit the two together. I used a "widescreen" project setting and imported my 4:3 stills and video to the timeline. Then I set the 4:3 stuff to "match output source" in the Pan/Crop area. But I had to be sure that it was all keyframed at the first frame. Otherwise it will move into that output setting wherever it was clicked. I then input my 16:9 footage and used PTT with the "insert 2-3 24p pulldown: setting. It printed out wonderfully.

Question: is there a better way to do this?
