4:3 to 16:9

I shot 4:3 but framed with 16:9 guides on the xl1s. I then brought that footage into vegas 5 and cropped the footage to 16:9 letterbox. What I would like to do is to take that cropped image and make it a true 16:9 image....yes, I know this results in lower quality..but thats ok for what i'm doing.

I'm not to sure how the NTSC Widescreen function works. So if someone could really explain to me exactly what that does...that would be nice.

What I'm also trying to do is to make a DVD with anamorphic widescreen..so that when the DVD player is set for 4:3 it displays the video with letterbox on a 4:3 tv...and if the DVD player is set to 16:9 it is displayed fully on a 16:9 tv...and squished on a 4:3 tv. I hope this is possible with DVDA2.

I hope some of this makes sense...thanks

Jeremiah

i change 4:3 into 16:9 by the following method. I bring it into a timeline that is set in the project menu for "widescreen." Then I click on the first frame of my clip and go to pan/crop and click on "match output source. Then I print it to tape using the "insert 2-3 pulldown" setting in the "print to tape" pulldown screen. This outputs a 16:9 "letterboxed" product. I match 4:3 stills the same way. in this way, I can also mix video clips which are shot in 4:3 with clips shot in widescreen 16:9--as in a PD 170. Works for me!

I did that (minus the print to tape) and it looks great...but...will i be able to import that footage into DVDA2 and make an anamorphic widescreen DVD that can both be letterboxed on a 4:3 tv and fill the full screen of a 16:9 tv?

I opened up DVDA2 in NTSC widescreen and all my 16:9 videos look great on the computer in widescreen form. My only problem is that I do not own a 16:9 tv, so I can't effectively monitor my video.

thanks

As long as you 1) set your project to widescreen, crop your video to widescreen, and use one of the widescreen templates to render, you should get exactly what you want. It will be letterboxed on a standard television and will fill a widescreen television.

One thing that is also imprtant here - on your playback device - DVD player/PS2/whatever - you need to make sure that you have the output set based on your TV/Monitor. If you have it set to 16:9/widescreen but you only have a 4:3 TV your image will not be letterboxed, it will be squished.
