4 GIG of ram in Intel D875PBZ? uh uh.

After installing 4 gig of ram in my intel board the cmos said everything was fine. But the post up said the ram was only 3304 instead of 4096.
No big deal but then Media player had a hard time playing audio. So did V5, and Acid pro 4. Sometimes it would play fine, other times nothing, and sometimes all garbage noise and sometimes low level with garbage in the background. "E" mail to Intel and they said there
is a problem with a 4 gig install in that the Video card aperture (265) will
take ram away from the post at a 2 to 3 times rate as in mine (265 x 3
=795 minus 4096 = 3301 posted. What they did not say was what it
did to the audio playback. So now I have to wait until the new bios is
created to resolve this problem. They are up to P-22 and I kind of figured they have the same guy writing software that was working for
NASA. I am now back to 2 gig with piece of mind and 2 more gig of ram
sitting in the dresser drawer. I have to admit that the SATA raid "0" install went like a piece of cake. I know now that memory problems can be devastating. One final note: Forge 7.0a played flawlessly even with
the 4 gig setup.

JJ, what kind of RAM modules did you use and in what configuration? (i.e. 4x1GB, 2x2GB, etc.) Were they approved specifically for the motherboard? Sometimes you can get some strange timing problems with all of the banks filled up that will cause oddball errors like this. I know Intel motherboards were notorious for this during the Rambus days. I might suggest running memtest with the 4GB back in your mobo to see if there's a problem somewhere along the memory interface.

Also...what do you need 4GB for an editing workstation anyway? I have to admit the coolness factor is there, but there's virtually nothing short of having 20 heavy-duty applications open all at the same time that's going to make 4GB of RAM useful. Your UI is probably going to be your biggest hindrance at that point too with that many apps open.

TVCmike:
4 gig for very large still photos approximately 550 per project with 10 sec duration. (500k to 1.5meg jpeg.) Also for rendering which in my system hangs around 1.4 gigs during the render. If I don't delete out the two shuttle pro items and some sound card stuff I will get a run out of memory error about 80% through the render. The ram problem is an admitted Intel defect in the bios
and they are trying to come up with a correction, at least thats what they said in the "E" mail. I used 4-1gig Avante modules which were tested by Intel. I tried 3 modules but it would default to single channel
operation. The CMOS says everything is just fine when the 4 modules are in but the main post-up doesn't. The Intel monitor software says
everything is wonderfull and so does the XP pro system info in the accessories program menu. The "system menu" in XP Pro says "no it aint". (3322 instead of 4096) What is amazing to me is nothing on the computer would play sound tracks except Forge 7.0a.
