5.1 surround not working on DVD

Hi, I have a problem in that any DVD I make doesnt appear to have surround sound when played in my DVD player. When inserted into my PC powerdvd says it is 6ch 5.1 surround sound but when I put the disk in my DVD player it says its Dolby D but only comes out of the left and right speaker. None of the others.

But put a commercial DVD in and it plays on all 5 main speakers fine.

I have created a 5.1 project in vegas with all channels seperate. I know it works as I have also exported the project as AIFF files and it creates the six files all with the sound I would expect coming from each.

I then export to a 5.1 AC3 file and the MPEG and create a new project in DVD architect with 5.1 as the sound format, import the file and burn. But play on DVD player (a philips) it just will not come out of the rear speakers.

My versions are
DVDA - 4 build 125
Vegas - 7.0a build 115

I have scoured the web and read the help and it looks like ive done everything possible. Below is a screenshot of my project.

You are using the DVD Architect template in Vegas to render the MPG file WITHOUT audio, right?
Then you render the AC3 5.1 file with the same name as the MPG file, and DVD Architect should pick up thes separate audio file separately. If the MPG file has audio in it, it will overwrite the AC3 file you created.

OK, just eliminating possible issues here . . .

Do you have your DVD player hooked up correctly to your receiver?

Is your DVD player in the correct audio mode?

Is your receiver in the correct audio mode?

I'm sure they are, but sometimes things like that are the culprit.

While this does not affect me, I thought I just read the other day that the 5.1 coming out as stereo is a documented problem with Vegas 7; reportedly to be fixed in the next update.

I have rendered without sound

Rendered a seperate AC3 5.1 file and added it to the project.

DVD burns fine and Powerdvd says its 5.1 but when played in the real DVD player no surround.

Real DVD works fine, stick in the matrix and all the surround goodness is there. The speakers connect directly to the Philips DVD player (dvd and 5.1 decoder all in one).

I thought the 5.1 rendering issue was just a problem with rendering taking hours instead of minutes?

For kicks, render out audio as 6 separate streams in Vegas 7.
Import those to Vegas 4/5/6.
Render as a 5.1 ac3 file
Burn a DVD.

What happens?

good call Spot

some people are having issues with AC3 encoding in V7... which is why i aint touching V7 until al these issues are resolved..

Hi spot, I did that and it works, sound is fine. I did the same thing, export to 6 files and import into a new vegas 7 project and once again it sounds really tinny and also doesnt play in surround. For some reason 7a just produces crap AC3 files.

Anyone know of a work around other than rendering in 6?

thanks LJA, I am having every single one of those problems and rendering in 6 seems to be my only solution.

My 6 is currently in a virtual machine, does anyone know if its safe to have it on the same PC as 7 and if there is anything I should know before installing.

Hoping the update is out soon, this vid has to be on disk by this coming Saturday and would like to avoid rendering in a virtual PC.

Thanks
