6.0b crash - Help, About, Multimedia Devices

Running IBM Thinkpad T41, 512MB, WinXP SP1.

Bug 1. I bought Vegas 6.0b and installed it over 6.0a demo, but I hadn't resolved an old problem with earlier Acid version of Sony Media Library. In Vegas6a, I had been getting the start-up error message "could not open Sony Media Library...", but I just clicked OK and 6a demo opened fine. (I also had Acid 5a installed, plus expired demos of Vegas5d and SF7 (its not my production PC ;-) ). Now when starting Vegas6b, when I clicked OK to the Media Library error message, Vegas 6b hangs. I tried installing the newer Sony Media Library (sonyloopsdatabase_enu_s34.exe), but that didn't help. I tried uninstalling the library from Add/Remove Programs. That didn't help. I tried cancelling Media Manager when that was loading. No luck. I could not get into Vegas to change or remove the bad media library. After many attempts and reboots, I uninstalled ALL of my Sony software, deleted ALL the Sony directories, cleaned the registry, and then reinstalled and registered SF8a and then Vegas6b. Back in business....I think. (I'm waiting with Acid5b til I'm sure Vegas6b is running fine.)

---by the way, is there a way to open Vegas without opening the Media Manager, regardless of whether it's enabled in preferences or not? And is there a way to open Vegas with "default" preferences (in case of corrupted preferences)? I though maybe holding shift or ctlr while starting Vegas might help. But no.

Bug 2. 10 minutes into my squeaky clean registered installation of 6.0b, I looked at the Help, About dialog. In Help, About Vegas Software, clicking on the Multimedia Devices tab gives me a "Sony Vegas 6.0" message box containing "An error occurred during the current operation. An exception has occured". Clicking OK gives me a hung Vegas. I have repeated this several times. Same thing happens. I will try again after rebooting...but first to get this message off. Oh, I don't have any multimedia devices...just a plain ThinkPad, with Logitech MX310 USB mouse.

To Sony: The contents of the "details" pane of the error message are pasted below, and contents of the Computer and Components tabs below that.

Anybody else have this problem?

I had problems with my IBM T40 and a Logitech mouse because the Logitech driver reserved some memory segments in the RAM that it shouldn't... As a result my Laptop was behaving very strange. I uninstalled the Logitech mouse (sold it) and now I am using the Thinkpad track point. No problems every since. But I must confess I only have Vegas 5 installed. Go and check the logitech site. At the time I had found the bug with some IBM Laptops there. Logitech offered a workaround (you have to modify some settings in the registry file) which did not work for me...

Possible solution for the sfcd.cdd exception error:

I experienced the same error. Since it has to do with the sfcd.cdd file, I looked for software that interacts with the cd drives and found the following:

Uninstalling Sonic DLA (which was pre-installed on my Dell notebook) solved the problem!

I hope this helps. If not, look for other "drive letter access" software or similar, that enables drag and drop write access to your CD- or DVD-ROM drive(s).

kind regards,
Chris.
