6.0b Media Manager is fouled up

Installed 6.0b yesterday. Media Manager would fail to initialize.

Uninstalled/reinstalled 6.0b today. Worked for a while.

Now it won't load at all. 6.0b hangs repeatedly, even if I start Media Manager manually from the Administrative Tools Services control panel manually.

Can I disable Media Manager? It's more trouble than it's worth, considering I can't edit at all this afternoon.

May go back to 5.0d.

You can disable MM in preferences. It's strange... I had all kids of crashing issues with MM in the beginning and then it suddenly starting working. It needs some work but is really a great addition to my workflow and I could not imagine not having it now on large projects. The one I'm working on right now has 1900 clips and after carefully tagging all of the clips finding them is extremely easy.

I could not get to the Vegas preferences because 6.0b hung every time I tried to start it. It worked after I uninstalled/reinstalled the whole thing for about 3 or 4 starts, then started hanging.

So I uninstalled just Sony Media Manager 2.0 using the Add/Remove Program Control Panel.

Now it fires up in seconds just like 5.0d, but lacks the Media Manager.

Not having used it at all (I just got it successfully installed today) I can't say as I miss it.

A few people have reported hangs on starting Vegas 6, but we have not been able to reproduce the media manager as the root problem.

If you disable the media manager in preferences (on the general tab near the bottom), do you continue to get occasional hangs during launch? If you can't get into Vegas to disable the preference (chicken-n-egg issue), you can use the Services control panel utility to disable the MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service. Then when Vegas launches you'll get two warning messages about the media manager component not being able to communicate with the database service, but the rest of Vegas should launch fine.

If that doesn't resolve it, try holding down the control key and shift key and then double click the Vegas icon while continuing to hold them down until you see the main application screen. This will reset your Vegas preferences in case something about them is causing an issue (e.g. specialized audio or video drivers not initializing correctly or something).

By editing a certain text file, you can enable a verbose log of media manager actions. If you can only reproduce the hang at launch with the media manager enabled, it would be very helpful if you could collect a verbose log for us so that we can try to resolve any root problem. Please try the above actions first and let us know.

As a MSFT SQL Server expert, and reading the forum regarding crashes in new V6, I chose not to use Media Manager. Sorry Sony, but personally, my media management needs are meager, so I didn't want to risk my editing/rendering performance. I did notice a very long program launch time, then turned it off in perferences.

I have had no crashes. Edit HDV, but not 100 clips at a time. Very stable. Very happy with v6.

My XP Home personal system at home works fine with Media Mgr. I don't use server functionality there.

Here at work I have to use a standard corporate XP Pro load that already has a lot of server functionality installed. There may be some conflict there. Not sure.

Also experienced very long launch times, even when MM did load. It's a nice-to-have, but not critical.

It was hanging so badly, though, that I could not get to the preferences without uninstalling MM altogether.

If I have time I'll try to get that verbose log generated for you.

I had the exact same problem and SONY diagnosed it as a conflict with my REGISTRY MECHANIC software. They indicated that they are working on the problem.
