64 bit to 32 bit duplication -why?

Richard Jones wrote on 12/7/2010, 6:53 AM
I've recently had to buy a new compter and, as it's running on 64 bit Windows 7, thought I'd upgrade to Vegas 10. This I've done, installing both the 32 and 64 bit versions so that I can make use of those Plug Ins which are available in only one version.

I've just loaded soome events into the 64 bit version and done some editing and was surprised to find that all the work I had done was duplicated on the 32 bit version (i.e. all captures, titling, arrangement of events and FX came up on Vegas 10 32 bit when I opened that).

This seems weird. Does anyone have any ideas why this shouuld be happening and on how to stop it as well?

The default for new installs is to load the last used project. There is no duplication. This is just your last Vegas project opened in the 32-bit version. To change this, go to Options | Preferences | General and uncheck the option to Auto-load the last project.

Sorry to come back again but when I go to File and trawl down to open the project I want, it still comes up on each version with all the latest edits included whether they were done on that version or the other. This seems to suggest that work in one version is automatically duplicated in the other. Can this be right? I should have expected the two versions to be completely independent of each other.

There is only one version of Vegas. It's version 10. You can run it in 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode but it's one version. Creating new Templates or organizing FX into folders, or anything else you do to Vegas you are doing in version 10. It doesn't matter if you run it in 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode, all of the changes will be seen because there is only one version... (no duplication) version 10. Hope this helps.

And there is only one version of the .veg project file whose name you see in the list. You can edit it in either 32- or 64-bit Vegas, but the .veg file is not duplicated.

Thank you. That's very helpful and explains the "duplication."

My only question then is what happens to an event where I've used an FX Plug In that will only work in one version? Surely that won't be replicated in the other if that version doesn't allow the use of that particular Plug In -- or does it?

You'll get an error when you open the .veg file in the version that doesn't have the plug. The .veg file is not damaged or altered, so long as you do not save it in this state.

For example, if you use 32-bit with a plugin that doesn't exist in 64 bit, like Noise Reduction, then later open that project in 64 bit Vegas, on opening you'll get a message about a missing plug in. Assuming you meant to open this in 32 bit, you would then close 64 bit Vegas and reopen the project from 32 bit Vegas, and all will be well.

Thank you. It seems obvious when it's all spelt out like this.

I repeat my comment of 3.21.25 today, namely, "What great people we have on this forum. There are so many people willing to help. It's marvellous."
