7 out of 10 Full Screen

I have 4:3 original footage that has been imported from a Sony mini DVD. I have rendered all the separate files together with Vegas 8c to give a single file per DVD, using 4:3 MainConcept PAL Settings. I have 10 DVDs to replicate. With DVD Architect, I want to generate a DVD for presentation on a Widescreen TV, but with the 4:3 video centered (with side letterboxes). When I export the combined clips into DVD Architect, I find that 3 of then do as I wanted, but 7 of them show as distorted video that fills the 16:9 screen. I am sure that all my settings in both Vegas and DVD Architect were the same. The files all seem to be the same type, dimensions etc as reported by Vegas. Is there some subtle setting I am missing? Any help appreciated.

16 x 9 and 4 x 3 video will always be the same dimenstions (720 x 480 NTSC). The difference is the Aspect Ratio. When you create a 16 x 9 video, there is a flag that is set in the MPEG file for the DVD program to see and set.

You need to render these as 16 x 9 with a 4 x 3 video within. This is done in Vegas. Check your vegas settings.

Thanks, I had nearly got to that conclusion on my own.
However, because this will only really be a backup of the mini DVDs, perhaps my best option would be to save the imported mpg scenes on a data DVD. That way the DVD player would see and play these as just mpg files. This way there is no rendering or loss of quality on my part. I can save the rendering for my production video that I will create in due course.
Does this sound sensible?
Thanks.
