8 Core Optimization For Vegas

There is one other possibility that has been mentioned on this message board before. It is supposedly possible to set up multiple versions of the Vegas network rendering server to run on a single machine and set the core affinities so that each server is hosted by its own set of four cores. Each copy of the server has to use a different port number. I have no idea as to whether this would work or not, because I do not have an 8 core machine at my disposal. Further, whatever gains are made by this approach might be canceled out by the increased overhead and subsequent stitching of the render file back together.

Also, although I mentioned the Internal settings (and also stated clearly my opinion that they do very little good in this case), the suggestion that they "can hose your system" is probably not warranted either. Most of the Internal settings are either A) very straightforward and quite handy or B) do nothing of substance for most users. Although it is possible to select settings that might prevent Vegas from running, the Vegas manual explains how to restart Vegas with default settings. Even if this option failed, you could always reinstall Vegas. It is not likely at all that changing any of the Internal settings in Vegas would have any impact on your Windows installation or your hardware. In a production environment, there is zero reason to fool with the Internal settings, but that's not what this thread is about.

Just an FYI. Toms hardware ran an article a year or two (or 4) ago about permanently setting processor affinity for programs. I couldn't find it on the tom's site but this article references it:

Heard ( at NAB) what I will call rumor that Sony is looking for beta testers with 8 core 64 bit systems to beta the Vegas V9. I took this to mean that Vegas 8 didn't really support 8 cores. You may want to contact Sony, sign on your NDA and have some fun with your state of the art hardware. Good luck.

If you were to take SCS at their word about Vegas' default settings then , no, they don't intend for it to use 8 cores. It's also not currently intended for a 64-bit OS.

I think your's is the second rumour I've seen that 8 cores on Vista 64 was in the works.

I don't believe it is Vegas pro 9 they were referring to at NAB. It was 8.1, which will be made available soon to Vegas Pro 8 users for free and it (8.1) is the 64 bit version.

September Or October/November (S.O.O.N.). ;-)

Man! Stop breaking my code language. Now, if I ever was under a NDA it will be revoked for telling too much or If I don't have one I will never get one due to the high risk associated with my "code speak" here on the forum.

Thanks a lot jabloom :)

Thanks

@what the fx,

As long as you have the number of rendering threads set to at least 4, you should be fine. Vegas 8P will use 4 cores efficiently to render. It just won't use 8 cores properly, or at least no one here has figured out how to do so yet.

Um, hello, is this thing turned on?!
Vegas Pro 8.1 will have complete support for 8 cores. I SAW THE DEMO WITH MY OWN EYES UPSTAIRS in the SCS booth at NAB. It will also support 64 bit. SCS was indeed looking for beta testers who have dual quad core machines and 8 gigs of RAM. By the time you figure out some network rendering trick version 8.1 will already be released and pumping out faster renders (AND encodes) than any processor affinity scheme that you can think up.

Does anyone else who goes to NAB actually talk to the dev team, or do you just sit and watch the demos?!

@ Idiot Savant

Who are you directing your comments to? The SCS booth was actually downstairs in the South Hall.

Is 64-bit Vista required for 8-core support of Vegas Pro 8.1?
Or will the 8-core support also work with 32-bit Vista ?

I believe he was referring to the fact that the SCS booth has a staircase in the back that took you to the top of the booth where the private demos were done. So it was actually upstairs in the downstairs booth. ;-)
