I feel somewhat guilty here - i adviced you to get a Sony Dig8.
I have captured at least 100 hours of VHS (pass trhough), 8 and Hi8 tapes with my old (2001 model) DCR TRV 430E (PAL vers)
I had no idea of that Sony had change the Dig 8´s standard.
I really hope that you can find a used (NSTC?) model and I can promise you that it will fill all your needs.
Some older models have just DV-out but if you can catch one and
want DV-in (for savings) it can be fixed with programming (gadgets),
For saving of edited material in avi mode Dig 8 tapes ar better than DV tapes - they can take 90 minutes edited material on one tape.
I really hope you can work this out!

The DVD cam will record and compress to mpg2 and encrypt to vob files. If you want to do any editing, color correction, audio corrections, etc, then DO NOT BUY THE DVD CAM! you will lose more quality as you have to drage the vob files to the timeline, edit and then rerender to mpg2 and then re encrypt to vob files meaning, LOSS OF QUALITY- moreso than if you just bought a camera with pass through or that will play 8mm. If you only have ten tapes- borrow or rent one and be done with the matter. Surely there is a store or a friend who has one that will allow you to borrow or rent one if you have no more than 10 tapes. Just another thought on this long long subject.
