9a - Sample Text - BUG

[r]Evolution wrote on 8/2/2009, 6:50 PM
It's been confirmed and the problem diagnosed... PLEASE issue a fix already!
The proposed workaround of Rendering out your Text to a Video File is NOT efficient!

I continue to scrub through my project and find SAMPLE TEXT everywhere!
This happens every time I open it to continue my edit. This is WITHOUT the Copy/Paste/Undo scenario... it just happens! -Although looking at it, I think it happens to the Generated Text Media Events that were Copy/Pasted creating another copy

This has got to be the worst BUG I've ever encountered in an NLE. It has seriously cost/lost me days of work due to having to re-do numerous Generated Text Media Events (3hrs today alone). This is the last project I will touch with Vegas until this issue is fixed as it's NOT cost effective to work this way, having to re-do your work so many times over. (people get tired of hearing about other NLE's but it's times like these when I'm soooo glad I have Media Composer, Premiere Pro, & FCP.)

My second set of National PSA's has been scrapped in VP9 & gone to Premiere Pro CS4. It was simply a lot less work, time, and frustration to restart in Premiere as apposed to always having to re-do the Text(s). My current project has a Run Time of 45minutes and we are in the 'Revision Phase' so it would neither be Cost Effective to restart in another NLE and it is getting to the point of where it is costing money to continue the edit due to this bug.

I can see where this may be 'Fun' or not that big of an issue for a beginner or those that do not depend on their NLE to make a living. Well, I use mine to make a living and this one is NOT cutting it.

Also, my Generated text has NO OPTIONS for Left, Center, or Right justification.
Is this option NOT and option for Generated Text Media?

Sony, if you're listening, PLEASE fix the Generated Text SAMPLE TEXT issue soon!

I have to agree, this bug makes 9a so unuseable, that I cannot fathom them leaving it un-fixed for long. To suggest that I should render out the text in a transparency maintaining format (usually quite a large file size is required for that) is not a fix at all.

I am a big proponent of Vegas Pro, and I appreciate all the hard work of all the people who make it, and I know some of them quite well. But the fact that they have marketed this as a professional NLE, suggests to me that they really REALLY need to have a fix out soon.

And based on their increased response to Forum requests, it would suggest to me that they will have one, but it's all a question of timing. ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO BE FAST. I know they don't release things outside of a,b,c, etc... but this needs to be fixed quickly as they're just shooting themselves in the foot.

I fully expect to see something, just really hoping it's soon.

Sync,

Couldn't you just copy/paste your entire timeline in V9.a back into a working V8.c project?

erikd? Have you tried it? - I just did, and VP8 crashes to a closed. Not even a warning menu. I can copy paste individual Media Events, but not a whole, moderately complex, Timeline. When I try this I get a crash to close of VP8.

EDL does a lot of it, but no Generated Media and the "live" FXs haven't come across - but it would "appear" that the effect from VP9 may have - odd? Haven't tried transfer over thru EDL Track Motion nor many other options from witin VP9 to VP8.

VP8 crashed when I tried to paste stuff from 9.0a as well, and when I did manage to paste individual ProType Titler events from 9.0a to 8, I got... You guessed it: Sample Text in them. :(

I ended up redoing the project from scratch in 8.0c instead. Though I did manage to extract a really long scroll page to the clipboard at least and get the text in that way, though I had to redo all the formatting.

This bug and the XDCAM SD bug that I found (audio dropouts) are both fatal to my use of 9.0a till they are fixed.

And though I do certainly hope they get the fix done quickly, I want them to take the time needed to get it right, or we'll just all be in the same boat again. Meanwhile, 8.0c will do fine for me.

Meanwhile... I'll just be here FIXING these 13 texts that just reverted to SAMPLE TEXT again since my last post. Even the .BAK file has SAMPLE TEXT corrupting it.

So here we go... another HOUR lost due to TEXT that has already been done!

I know now to bring the VASELINE with me when I go to VEGAS.

Workaround I'm finding (after being bit in the butt) is for those w/ RED or Graffiti.
Simply use them instead of the Generated Text.

I like the quickness of the Basic Text Generator but have to go with what I have to go with... and that would be Premiere Pro, FCP, Media Composer, or BORIS from within Vegas.

"erikd? Have you tried it?"

Yeh and it worked for me but it was only a 90 minute timeline with cuts only, region markers and 4 tracks of audio. Lucky, I got to paste that sucker back into 8c before I ran into some real problems!!!!!

Is my perception true that when we got 9a we traded some of our old bugs in for just as many new ones??

Just got bitten, too, after spending yesterday with client doing titles.
Might I suggest the real fix is for Sony to withdraw 9a? -and soon?
I just uninstalled and went back to 9.0

not really - 9a addressed a lot of problems that needed to be addressed, but the real answer is for Sony to institute a patch asap.

I'm starting a new project next week. And for me it is a fairly large one. Text and Stills, and so on, mixed in with animation using Track Motion with Parent/Child manipulation. I have made the decision to do it in VP8c. This is truly very unfortunate as the new VP9 features, which I have NOW been spoiled with, will have to be ignored.

So, David, ASAP ain't early enough for me.

Pity - real big pity . . .

I agree here. This bug is really a recall class bug. You basically cant do any text titles. The failure repro case is pretty complex, I'm never going to feel comfortable editing any text in 9.0a until it's fixed.

I've also noticed that my render presets seem to be upgraded to a new format in 9.0a, so going back to 9.0 is going to be messy.

I'm really stunned that this was missed. (or even worse, someone decided that this was not a ship stopper).
It's such a shame, a release with so many good fixes on so many important issues, but sabotaged by a stupid stupid regression.

Does the problem also exist with Pro Type Titler?

I had a problem of disappearing text in 9.0 (vista 64), so I don't know how safe 9.0 is either. I was using PTT then too. I have just begun a year long project so at this point I haven't really dealt a whole lot with titles. I'm certainly not in any rush to deal with them until this problem is solved.

This must be infuriating, particularly having to redo already completed work.

I'm probably pushing my luck mentioning this, but I'm still using 9.0a (32bit) without any text problems, which makes me wonder why. I have dozens of Text events, several "dot point lists" which reveal each text item separately with linear wipes, and they are all staying as they were created.

This is using the Old Text Generator, in XP - are any who are experiencing the bug using XP?

9.0a 64-bit version on Vista 64-bit has this problem. I was shocked when all my hard work was replaced with the generic text. There are other issues with this version but I want to stick with the topic.

Reports of this problem make me ill. The final push for me to get a more advanced editing program was when my old Pinnacle splattered my titles randomly over the timeline. My choice was Vegas 4.

Since almost every project I do has many titles, I will not be able to use V9 until this bug is fixed. Rats!
