A BASIC GUIDE TO EDITING HDV WITH SONY SOFTWARE

In response to inquiries about a beginner's guide to editing with Sony software, and in an attempt to get a friend started with it long distance, I "slogged" through weeks of effort to write this guide, at -- http://www.donferrario.com/ruether/Sony-editing.htm. There is also a printable version. I welcome comments, criticisms, and suggestions. Thanks.

A BASIC GUIDE TO EDITING HDV WITH SONY SOFTWARE (Update)

After MANY more weeks of toil, MANY rewrites, some corrections, and some additions (a numbered referenced program screen capture and a finished printable version of the guide are now included), I think (oh, I really do hope so...! 8^) that this guide for beginning video editors is finally complete. Comments, suggestions, and corrections are welcome. The guide is at -

Thanks a lot, I will be reading it all to learn more about Vegas.

Have you considered doing video tutorials? I find videos so much easier and faster to learn from and with Youtube now accepting 1280x720 HD resolution you can actually see whats on the screen! You can use the freeware screen grab software CAM Studio and record your voice while showing stuff in Vegas, then edit the video in - tadaa! - Sony Vegas :-)

Just wanted to say what a great job you did David. I can't imagine the amount of time, thought, and work that went into it. You must have too much time on your hands, or really have a passion for what you do ;) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I would also have to go with Jim, and say that a video tutorial would be nice. I watch no less than a dozen a week, and find them to be very helpful (usually). If your video was half as good as your written, a lot of people would be greatly benefitted. Thanks again. Cin

Thanks for the comments (and I do have time on my hands, being mostly housebound, and I do work on projects rather intensely, being an Asperger ;-). This editing guide started out as a "brief" aid for a long distance friend after 'phone help proved useless, but it GREW! For all the work, discomfort, temper, etc. expended, I will make nothing (in terms of money) from it. The idea of a video version is a good one, and tempting, but I just finished this version (WHEW!!!). Further, I now often find speaking difficult, so narrating a video may be difficult, alas (but I may still give it a try in a DVD-for-sale version sometime...). 'Course, there is always "Part II", with more advanced material - but I don't think I want to go there for a LONG time...8^)

But wait, there's more...8^) After about two months of work and MANY rewrites, corrections, modifications, additions, etc., the Guide really is now finally complete. It includes a numbered referenced screen capture, a printable version, a PDF copy, and numerous URLs for video guides, editing instructions, and video-making advice. It is at http://www.donferrario.com/ruether/Sony-editing.htm.

That does look like a lot of work. I'm going to save the link and have a look at it over time. Thanks.

BTW, that coleus photo in your Digital Pictures 1 would work really well in b&w.

Thank you SOOO much for this! What a huge job it must have been for you! After just browsing your pages, I already can tell that it explains things better than the manual does. I really need someone to just take me by the hand and lead me through it.

For example instead of assuming I know what the preferences mean, (or even that I want to know), you just tell me which ones to select and leave it at that for now.

And (for example) there's no way I'd ever admit to anyone how long it took me to figure out how to do a simple TRIM! Most of my questions start off "OK, so now what???" or "Yes, BUT..." - those are difficult things to search for - and it seems that you answer those questions. :-))
