Exactly, Sony/SoFO have definately been listening to us over the past year, and thay have addressed a lot of the things we wanted. Yet people still complain about stupid things like the shape or color of the buttons.

There were a couple of comments in the November thread from people who said they WANTED different color/shaped buttons!

And it's not like you can't kill the new UI, either. Just go to "Windows Classic" in XP themes.....

It is surprising that everyone in the thread, practically, had compositing and
effects issues. Only one person mentioned sub-sequences/nesting veg
files in other veg files. Maybe we dropped the ball on this one. I have to
admit that the lack of nesting sequences really feels like a great loss. I
was almost planning on using it on my next project.

I am one of those who is not overwhelmed by this release but I certainly can appreciate the effort and the quality of coding that goes into an upgrade like this. Congrats on your efforts.

Something else I find interesting: I seem to recall that when Vegas 4 came out, the folks on the audio side were somewhat underwhelmed while the video guys were thrilled. A lot of gloom and doom was expressed along the line that Vegas was abandoning its roots (and original audience) and that Sony would only make it worse.

This time, the most significant enhancements seem to have been made on the audio side, with several nice additions to the video capabilities (and a ton of little usability tweaks that I'm discovering as I "play.")

So perhaps Sony felt that the priority was to deal with the audio guys' concerns this time out; after all, when it comes down to it, the main complaint people in the video forum have is the new look icons. Jeez, browse the forums of a couple of competing programs; we've got it pretty good over here!

And the key to showbiz survival is: always leave them wanting more!

The only feature I'm still missing is I suppose what everyone's referring to as nested timelines; I'd describe it more as a desire to be able to group a bunch of tracks together so that they can be muted/soloed/minimized as a unit, or expanded to work on as required.

Is this something I'm prepared to pull a Zippy over and shout from the rooftops that, because Vegas doesn't have one feature I desire, it's destined for the scrap heap of software history? Absolutely not! For such a reasonable upgrade price, I feel like I've gotten a great deal on what was done. By the time V6 rolls around, the wish list will grow again, and I'm sure "nested timelines" will be at the top...

When we're evaluating how well Sony responded to our demands, don't forget the bonus software they've thrown in with this upgrade. The free versions of Boris Graffiti and Magic Bullet seemed aimed directly at those who have pined for a better titler or "film look" plug-ins.

Indeed. And they also highlight the fact that Sony's name has been able to finally get some of the big players to make their tools Vegas-compatible. That can only be good news...

I agree that Sony/SOFO should be commended. I think it is a worthy upgrade and I think Sony offered us a very good price. Take a lesson from that, Adobe.

Rest assured, they will all be working on the next upgrade (after a well-deserved break) if they are not already doing so. I suspect the next wish list is already being addressed.

As so many have been quick to point out, it's Vegas I want changed, not the ENTIRE UI of Windows.

Disabling the XP themes in Vegas works on the problem but far from solves it. I've no issue with color -- what I do have issue with is that I have no choice in what kinds of colors I get to use.

I do have an issue with the icons, though, in any color -- they look thoroughly unprofessional to my eye. Look at how utterly goofy the "save snapshot" icon is, for example -- know of any computer that uses 1.44mb floppies with edges rounded like that? It looks like a one-toothed cartoon character staring back at me. The sliders and track buttons, too -- nearly everything has a toyish quality about it.

Maybe these things don't matter or are even pleasing to you -- great. But just like you I've spent time, energy and most importantly money on Vegas -- my opinion should be no less relevant or valid. After all, I'm spending my money...
