A list of known and verified issues in VP10c

Christian de Godzinsky wrote on 4/27/2011, 10:31 AM
Here is a short but compact list of known and verified errors in VP10c - either confirmed by SCS - or at least - by several users.

You can still add missing issues, but please also report about fixed issues in 10d, they deserve to get OFF the pending issues list ASAP. I will regularly update this first post in this thread, based on YOUR feedback posted here. Thank you SCS for the fixes so far!

FIXED IN 10d:

(1) Sony Color Curves - Tangent Bug
Discovered by Nick Hope, confirmed by SCS (not very serious):
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=759143

(2) Time Code Error
Reported by ErikD - Confirmed by SCS (very serious for those that depend on time-code):
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=755217

(8) GOP issue with 25p footage from CX700 camcorder
Reported in a foreign discussion board. Confirmed by SCS.

[16] V10.0c is not sharing ASIO drivers like V8 did
Reported by jasman and confirmed at least by by many other users. However, this MIGHT still be a problem with some other specific audio hardware and/or software, and not confirmed by SCS as a Vegas bug.
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=752909
Reported by jasman to be fixed when using RME Multiface sound cards.

OPEN issues in 10c and 10d:

(3) Vegas replacing footage on timeline
Reported at least by ChristofferDK - Confirmed (partially) by SCS (serious when it happens - for anyone):
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=757846

(4) ProTypeTitler delayed preview on the timeline
Reported by VanLazarus and me - Confirmed by several others (not very serious - but a real nuisance if you use ProType Titler interacively):
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=750774

(5) FX TL keyframes issues since rewrite for OFX
May have little impact unless using many curves and need precise sync. Some fixes with 10b but it definitively needs more work:
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=744007
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=736062

(6) Elastique pro issue with x64 which may jeopardize your mix
Discovered few days ago by myself. Confirmed by ChristoC. This one won't come fixed in 10d, I am hopeful it will with 10e:
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=760597

(7) Gamma compensation error with PNG images sequences imported into a 32bit 2.22 gamma project
Bug introduced with VP9, confirmed by SCS:

I can confirm that Vegas REPLACES FOOTAGE as well.

I can confirm that Vegas "renders" timeline upon reopening a saved project - cuts and splits are no longer visible.

I can confirm that Vegas crashes under random circumstances (I have a robust machine).

no area showing in chromakey selection tool picker (since ver 8?)

You're right Leslie. With V8, the rectangle drawing is broken (stacking), starting with V9 it is no longer drawn. Same for secondary CC, etc...

I thought you're supposed to be able to select an area when using the eyedropper tool in both the primary and secondary color corrector's too.

Can you say, 'regression testing'?

Just to BUMP it...

To have something meaningful to do while you are sitting there and checking every 10 minutes if the 10d update has arrived - why not consider to contribute to this list.

Chime in if you have found a bug in 10c that can be duplicated or is confirmed by others or SCS, but not yet listed here. This list is far from complete. Thanks to all contributors so far. I sincerely hope that collecting all knows issues will serve a good purpose. Don't we all want and hope SCS to tune Vegas into perfection?

cheers,

Christian

Have others experienced this? My first thought is that it sounds like you may be nesting a project rather than opening it. Can you give us a description of how to reproduce this (perhaps in a separate thread)? Or if there is already an existing thread on this, please link.

Thanks to everyone contributing.

Highly appreciated to have a ForumAdmin posting. Gives a cozy feeling knowing that someone from SCS is really reading these posts...I want to emphasize that I created this thread in a purely constructive spirit, and hope that no-one at SCS is offended. Just wanted to summarize collectively what real problems we have experienced, and what we really need to get fixed. In the hope it serves SCS too.

Wish that you will be able to reproduce the issue with VP10c replacing footage on the on timeline, as reported by many (including ChristofferDK and JimboWHO), and with the help of some new feedback from JimboWHO.

If this particular issue is approaching a solution, at least I could live with a somewhat delayed release of 10d.

I always do long-form editing in 8c (100% stable), but sometimes want to add a BCC7 effect and must open it in 10c. Unfortunately, I have had to give up on that option, for often my 8c projects are a mess when I look at the TL in 10c. Not sure if it's the "replacing footage" problem or what - I have not taken the time to tease out what goes wrong.

For now I simply open in 10c the original clip, or render out the scene where I want the effect, do that piece of the project in 10c, render it to Cineform, then put the rendered .AVI back onto the 8c TL.

When the project is complete, I render in 9xx - usually 64-bit unless a 32-bit plugin is involved. Sweet success is pretty much guaranteed . . .

Has anyone else had problems opening long, complex 8c .VEGs in 10c? (By complex, I mean many crop blurs, color corrections, and - before I bought BCC7 - many chromakeys, etc.)
LoTN wrote on 4/29/2011, 1:21 AM
I have similar issues.

I won't edit complex projects with V9 or V10 while 8c is fine. I won't render with 8c because of freezes, so I use 9 or 10 to render. Anyway I never had issue opening these projects in V9 or V10, my observation is that it may take a little bit more time to get the project loaded.

Regarding BCC7, it's unstable, I easily got crashes while changing plugin settings. It's hard to figure out if the problem is in the OFX host or BORIS code. Like you, I often circumvent the issue with intermediate renders of small chunks.

Another one I faced again recently. A project created from scratch with V9 x86 will open, will play in V9 x64 but Vegas won't display the TL while keyboard shortcuts and the shuttle do work. No footage mismatch. My observation is that something prevents Vegas UI to display the whole TL container window. After several days of edit with V9 x86, the x64 version was running ok again. It is 4 times I get this, I don't know why and how. I still have to find a way to reproduce it and check if V10 does the same.

On my contention that Vegas "renders" timeline upon reopening a saved project - cuts and splits are no longer visible - I need to go back and review the project and the steps I took. I thank Sony for dropping in to this thread and trying to help. I should hold open the possibility that I was wrong and that I may have inadvertently "nested"when I got the above result. I admit to getting a little bleary in the early morning hours.

Having said that I just want to applaud the last two posters for their tenacity and I would hope that SCS would appreciate their loyalty. It's amazing - the lengths these two users will go to to complete their projects. It's a testament to the inherent value that Vegas affords but at the same time underscores the current sad state of affairs. Read those two posts again.

I apologize for being so late with this shout-out but I do want to thank Farass for his offer to help me with the problems I had a few weeks ago that contributed to my decision to move on. I never did come back with the specifics he was asking for because in part I just got two damn discouraged. I guess I need a little bit more of what the above two people have.

Hi,

Thank you Paddy for your kind words. I appraise your attitude. Without the helpful contributions from other loyal users (aka long time forum members) it would not have been possible to put together this list.

I think most of us all share one thing in common, we like Vegas a lot (is love a too strong word here - maybe not?) - and many of us want to do whatever we can to help you to help us with some of the issues, to tune Vegas closer to perfection. However, there is not much a single user can do, else than joining efforts in testing issues we find, and finding patterns and then reporting. Or compiling lists like this. That is at least something, it motivates us especially when you show that you are listening!

Admins chiming in more often would not hurt the forum - nor your software business. If SCS USA has to follow some international Sony (Japanese) policies, then I fully understand the very few admin postings here. After all - this is a users forum. However, I'm confident that there would have been hundreds or maybe thousands of hours saved among users, if you had bravely blended into some discussions, and not had let us to find out dead ends by ourselves, the long and frustrating way.

Enough of that. Might I kindly ask if you already have a new tentative schedule for the 10d release? I assume that there are still issues you eagerly want to include into this release and you have good reasons for postponing. Again, a small delay here is probably worth the wait.

Sincerely,

Christian

Thanks a lot Paddy. I really appreciate this exchange too.

Now, speaking for myself, I am ready to wait some more months if this is the way to get a strong and robust 10d but I understand that other users may not be really happy...

I take on this to express some wish about the development cycle. If SCS could make a clear distinction between feature releases and maintenance releases it would help making Vegas more stable and help issuing corrective builds more often. I don't mean stopping development of new features, this can by done during the same period of time without any mess if a source code management system is used and associated with good practice policies. I don't think that SCS has no source code management system.

For what it weights...

ps: apologies for my english too. I know it is a little bit rough :)

LReavis wrote on 4/30/2011, 8:45 PM
Which reminds me: Does 10c Save with "Include Project Media" when the media include .PNG sequences? That's been broken a long time - the .PNGs don't (or didn't) get saved - forcing me to render out animations created outside of Vegas to .AVIs using PicVideo. Because PicVideo has no alpha channel capabilities, I often then have to use chromakey to put those animation into a scene. All in all, a time waster, with slightly inferior results.

I sure would like to hear that V10 can - or will - include the .PNGs along with all other media that get saved to one single hard disk when I complete a project . . .

Edit: Just wanted to add my voice of appreciation for Vegas. I've used several others, but I'm never tempted to go back to them. I almost gave up when v8 required so much of my time to get out a render, but v9 fixed most of my rendering problems, and the later 64-bit versions of 9 (e.g., 9c-9e) renders are almost 100% trouble free. Gotta love Vegas!

We still have time to add things that really bugs us (pun intended) to this list, while we are waiting for 10d.

I promise to update this list now so long you pinpoint problems that should be added. I will later (when issues becomes fixed) also edit the list accordingly.
