A Titillating Question...

Is it a viable option to be able to access one's desktop DAW (i.e., at home) from a laptop, DAW-type setup, anywhere in the world...? and do it in stealth mode as well (i.e., with "cans" instead of attaching speakers, etc.)..? I mean, burn a CDRW and work on it like that, sure, that's possible, but is it also possible do it from somewhere else on the globe, and do it wirelessly...why or why not..? having a laptop is certainly appealing in that you can "take you work/songs" with you, etc...

I see that...well, it's kind of a dumb idea anyway I spose...prolly this Cisco thing'll take off if they can make collaboration more "users friendly"...

One more thing I'm not really sure on: if one gets a 2d or 3d computer or whatever, can I ALSO use my purchased SOFO apps (and maybe sonar131) on another computer besides the one I have them in now, sans sonar...??

Your SoFo licence say you can have the software installed on multiple computers, but only have one in active use at any one time. Pretty rational and reasonable to my mind.

How that relates to a remote-desktop session I'm not sure (if viable in the first place wrt data bandwidth), but I think you could treat that as one single active session, if you are the sole user.

If you have a static IP address you can use PCAnywhere or MS Remote Desktop. Both of those are high-profile and full of security risks. We use VNC to connect remotely. As with any remote access software there are still security risks, but not as many because VNC is not as well known (for now). VNC
is freeware.

Of course, I'm not sure that any of this will work for you because sound won't stream through any of these connections (PCAnywhere, MS Remote Desktop, VNC). They are designed primarily for maintenence. And unless you have a static IP address it's going to be rather difficult as well.

VNC has no security and sends data in plain text. Our college switched to RemoteAdmin by Famatech, and it uses encryption and NT security if you want. You can also set the update rate for you screen. But you are still only controlling what is on the remote side. You couldn't stream audio from laptop to remote desktop. It only costs about $35, which is very inexpensive considering what Vegas or other apps cost.

Since when did they move Nashville to New York?

Homeland security. They've moved all the cities around to make life tougher for terrorists. My new studio is located in the corner of 10th street / 5th avenue, Miami, Colorado.
