In VidCap, under Options / Preferences, do you have "Enable DV device control" UNchecked? If this option is checked, VidCap will try to play a tape in the DV camcorder while capturing. With it unchecked, it will accept the signal being passed through the DV camcorder instead.

Also, make sure you have "minimum capture length" UN checked as well.

I think the blue screen is coming from the camera itself.
Can you play the tape back and see it OK on the camera's LCD?
If not what sort of camera do you have. If it's anything other than a D8 camera maybe it cannot cope with whats coming off the tape.

Are those tapes commercial? Maybe it's Macrovision copy protection kicking in. With my converter it will play fine for a few seconds, then darken a whole lot. Maybe your camera blue screens it instead.
