when choosing Optimize DVD in DVD-A, does it recognize the audio as ac3 5.1? That's one place to start. You can also burn a test disc and see if your audio shows up in 5.1. I think I've seen the DVD-A Optimization dialog tell me something need to be recompressed when I didn't think it should have.

The real test comes after you burn the disc. If it plays your mix in 5.1, you're golden. If you don't have a DVD+RW to practice on already, that'll be the best $5 you ever spent!

If you're producing a PAL format disc then DVDA will assume your audio files are PCM rather than AC3. When you optimise your project, check what format is selected on the pull-down menus at the bottom of the screen

I'm producing NTSC DVD's.
5.1 is surround isn't it?

By chance is the audio portion shorter than the video portion? And when you render the audio, are you selecting the entire range, i.e., a range that extends beyond the end of the audio file? I had a similar problem with this once.
