AC3 Sound quality

I have a high quality wave being used for the sound on my video. When I burn the dvd and play it, it sounds softer and less clear than the original .wav.
On prepare the audio is set to auto (ac3), but I cant find anywhere for the quality/bitrate of ac3. If I use up most of the disc with video will it automatically compress the audio to a lower bitrate AC3?

I think by default video and audio do share the bitrate, so when one drops or uses more the other has to adjust to deal with the change. Have you tried increasing the volume for the track in Vegas before you render? It might help for the final output.

Use Vegas to render the AC3 audio. In the "Render as" dialog box, select "Dolby Digital AC-3" as your "Save as type", select "Stereo DVD" as your template, then hit the "Custom" button and in the "Preprocessing" tab, there will be two instances where it says, "Film Standard" change it to say, "None." This will prevent the AC3 encoder from messing with the audio levels. The default 192kbps bitrate is normally fine, but you can kick it up to 224 or 256 if you'd like.

If you want to raise the overall volume of the encode set dialog norm to -31db. You should also set the line mode profile under dynamic range control to none so that the dynamic range isn't compressed especially if there is music.
