No difference at all. Unlike nasty people like Avid who ripped me off to the tune of $500. Buy the vegas academic and never look back.
Jsnkc wrote on 3/22/2004, 11:57 AM
The software is exactly the same, the only diffrence is the price.
If you can qualify for an academic version...Get It!

Isn't the difference in licensing? I thought with the academic version you didn't qualify for upgrades and you couldn't use it commercially.
Jsnkc wrote on 3/22/2004, 1:23 PM
I know there was a thread about this a while back and there was no diffrence in the Licencing agreement from what I can remember. Might want to do a search in the old posts to be sure.

I'd double check with Sony. They could of changed the EULA for academic people. Just make sure you get the free upgrade to V5. I don't know if you get it with academic versions (but with commercial versions you do).

The Sony End User License currently makes no distinction between an Academic or Commercial version of Vegas.

Mister HappyFriar, sir...

Could you elaborate on the "free upgrade to V5". I just registered my V4 but I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no V5.
cubelodyte wrote on 3/23/2004, 6:41 AM
You can get the non-academic (or the academic) version of Vegas +DVD for about $269 on ebay right now.

or here (
or here (Academic)
or here (Academic)

I don't know how legit this is, but you might want to check it out.

Here was Sony's response to an inquiry regarding academic limitations, license, use, etc. approximately 1-1/2 months ago:

"Thank you for writing. There is no difference between the academic and non-academic versions of the software other than the pricing. Please let me know if you have any other questions."

Anyone who bought V4 after March 1st gets a free upgrae to V5 i belive. Some website (www.videoguys.com) offer the free upfrade too. There was another thread on the forum that talked about it in detail. I didn't read past the first couple posts cuz I got Vegas a year ago. :)
TheHappyFriar wrote on 3/23/2004, 8:55 AM
I think SoFo once said that if you see a Vegas on e-bay, e-mail them (SoFo) to see if it's legit. One guy get a CD one time but an illegal serial # a while back.

the big question is whether or not the "free upgrade" is just an upgrade to V5 or an upgrade to V5 and DVDA. Anybody know? I called Sony personally and they said they couldn't comment because this information wasn't supposed to be available to the public yet.

>>>the big question is whether or not the "free upgrade" is just an upgrade to V5 or an upgrade to V5 and DVDA. Anybody know? I called Sony personally and they said they couldn't comment because this information wasn't supposed to be available to the public yet.<<<

According to Sony it is only Vegas 5, there is no mention of any DVDA upgrade for free onb the main Sony site. Here there is. However Vegas+DVDA is ok to get the rebate, but *not* from Sony directly. (??)

As for what Sony told you on the phone about the upgrade and rebate info not being "available to the public yet"...maybe they have not looked at the Sony Website - you can read all the rebate/upgrade information on it: http://bssc.sel.sony.com/Professional/markets/sound/vegas_rebate.html.
And
Vegas 5
DVD-A
TheHappyFriar wrote on 3/23/2004, 11:12 AM
Videoguys gives you an updated to V5 & DVDA 2 (or whatever it will be). They are the ones eating the cost of the free upgrade, so they can give you anything they want. :)

The real question is, if you buy an academic copy of Vegas 4 or Vegas + DVD will you get a free upgrade to Vegas 5? Anyone know?
cubelodyte wrote on 3/24/2004, 5:02 PM
I would imagine that if your academic status makes you eligible for a discount on the price of the full package you would also get a discount on the free upgrade.

Now, let's see how that would work...

Either a the same percentage multiplied by zero (which would be zero), or you apply the the discount straight up which would mean Sony would owe you about $500.
magicmike wrote on 3/24/2004, 10:58 PM
Actually on the Non-academic ebay link. That is where I got my copy of Vegas + DVDA.
It appears to be legit, unless the guy is an expert forger that just happens to know registerable serial numbers. I called up SONY anyway to confirm it is legit, only problem I have noticed was on the web form registration for the Vegas 5 upgrade that there was not enough spaces in the barcode # input field for my barcode. I called SONY on it and it appears to be a web problem that will get fixed soon.

So, does the $50 rebate also apply to academic copies? I don't see any text negating this anywhere, assuming those copies still count as "A stock"...
DWAnderson wrote on 3/26/2004, 8:56 PM
I am also interested whether the $50 rebate also applies to academic copies as well? Do those copies still count as "A stock"? What is "A stock"?

Does anyone know?
jester700 wrote on 3/27/2004, 6:38 AM
I asked. As I suspected, the rebate does NOT apply to academic versions. Getting a copy for $100 was quite a fantasy, though... ;-)
cheroxy wrote on 3/27/2004, 6:47 AM
Did you ask sony or dvguys? Did they say the rebate only or the rebate and the upgrade to v5 doesn't apply?
jester700 wrote on 3/28/2004, 7:25 AM
I asked Sony. I didn't think to verify the upgrade; I assumed that was valid no matter where you buy it.
