ACEDVio output to VHS or VCD

I have an ACEDVio and would like to output my project to VHS or VCD..

1. Can you advise the easiest & best way to send my output to VHS? I am using an 8mm Sony camcorder for my projects, no digital camcorder or DVD writer.

2. Can I get a better image from VHS than VCD (352 x 240) if my project is DVD NTSC and do a PTT to VHS?

Thanks for your help.

I’ve never used the ACEDVio so this is just a guess, but you should be able to just plug a VCR’s inputs to the analog outputs on the ACEDVio. Then do a print-to-tape just like it was a DV camcorder. It should send the video out the analog outputs. Since the ACEDVio is an internal card I’m sure there aren’t any switches to flip but perhaps there is a software control program that switches it to analog mode. If not, just try a print-to-tape and see what you get. (You might want to ask this question on the Canopus forums)

IMHO, yes, VHS gives much better quality than VCD. Some may argue that VCD is better quality that VHS but I’ve never seen any compression artifacts or blocking on a VHS tape and there are always present on VCD’s due to the low bitrate. Even my wife can quickly tell the difference and complained about VCD’s from the first day I started making them. I like VHS tape better but this is just my experience. DVD writers can be had for under $100 so I wouldn’t waste too much time with VCD’s.

Yup JR!

Point 1 - ACEDVio here, works like a dream to VHS tape. Vegas thinks that the card is a Microsoft DV Camera - which it would - and just PTT Manual. That's the only thing you need to do from within Vegas PTT, opt for MAnual control when Printing From Timeline. I'm still getting video feedback using the PTT function in the Capture/PTT function UNLESS I opt for working the Video controls, NOT the VCR controls just below the Preview window.

Point 2 - Yeah. Jump directly to DVD - burners are very reasonably priced now. And yes, I've been lately doing some old fashioned show reel VHS tapes of my work. Just been "booked" for a job in February on the basis of this Company seeing my VHS tape - go figure! I'm doing this as I'm getting up to speed with the DVD burning procedure. Just burnt a DVD-RW and it played really well . I use U-Lead Movie Factory 1, for this. AND it creates Menus. I like to keep things simple. Next stop will be committing this to a full DVD-R or DVD+R, having a Sony ± burner . .

I used to use Ulead MF 1 then 2 until I went to DVDlab. But Ulead MF2 works well for any SVCD's I make. I have Canopus ADVC-1394, doesn't have the anaolg outs the ACEDvio does. Would have gotten the ACEDvio card if it had been out then. Since I'm totally DVD now analog out really isn't important any more. Besides I can PTT back to my camera and then dub the camera to VHS tape if I need to.

Thanks for your info JohnnyRoy & Grazie & donp326, I am really getting a lot from this forum. Vegas 4 & ACEDVio is perfect for my needs. I just need to learn how to use it.

I will redo my projects to VHS. Also, I won't have to be limited by the size of the file as VCD or SVCD has.

Maybe in the next two weeks, I will buy a DVD writer, either Sony, Plextor or Pioneer depending on the included softwares.

Grazie, you mentioned you still use Ulead MF1. The MF3 is now available. Any reason why you are sticking with MF1?

Thanks for your help.

Hiyah rap0816! - "The MF3 is now available. Any reason why you are sticking with MF1?"

.. .Money? Spent my budget on this part of my tech needs.

. . Need? MF1 works for me and I'm still discovering what I can do with it. Nice static menus . . I can produce my own Backgorunds . .I can even have a Intro Video. It produces Search-able Scenes and these can be clicked on in the Main Menu . . These scenes can have a text title placed under them . . . that'll do me for the moment.

. . Happy? I suppose I'm content with it

. . Self development? Until I see that "work" dictates that I need something more - this is how I work generally - I stay put with what I've got . .

Having MF1 made my decision between Vegas & Vegas DVDA very easy. Do I need 5.1 surround? I don't have clients yet who are requiring I produce it. Yes, it would be need to do this, but I don't even have 5.1 on my kit . . more money . . I don't yet have a standalone DVD player either! But this could change very soon as our ASDA is running a deal on a Pacific DVD player for £40! - This has gotta be a no brainer . . . I tend to grow my vid business at the speed I get jobs . . Having purchased my Canon XM2 a year ago, and having got some "paid" event type 2nd and sometimes 1st camera work under my belt, I'm cracking on in getting the "bucks" in to pay for some further s/w and hardware. Oh yes, recently I got myself a dedicated NLE pc so that Vegas, Sound Forge and Boris Graf3 can play nicely together . . .

An update to a DVD authoring package that currently is giving me what I need? No, I don't think so . . . A DVD player, ah . . yup!! - What I reeeeally would like is a SOny Minidv VTR . .hey ho . ..

Thanks Grazie,

I also want a simple DVD authoring package. I could not find any Ulead MF1. Do you know any other out there?

I have done my PPT and noticed that the quality is very good considering that the source is from an 8mm analog camcorder.

Well, time to learn the other feature of Vegas 4.0e I can use.

I bought the Vegas 4 Editing Workshop book by Spot. There are some sample files not found on the CD. Do you know where I can find these sample files?

Thanks a lot.

"I also want a simple DVD authoring package. I could not find any Ulead MF1. Do you know any other out there? " . . er - yeah?? U-Lead Movie Factory's version 2 of the version 1 I have . .I don't understand why you would be looking for "1" . . . have I missed something?

I'm pleased you are "happy" with your analogue to digital experience. But nothing can compare to that which you will get with either a single or 3 chip DV camera . .

"There are some sample files not found on the CD. Do you know where I can find these sample files?" - I don't have Spot's book, so I can't confirm or deny either way . .However, Sony have these
Vegas 4.0 Sample Projects (from Vegas CD). On the same page are some sample veggies too!

Any good?
