"Add as take" not adding video AND audio

In Spot's great book on Vegas 5, he mentions setting up a "template" project where you can put empty events in the timeline, add your graphics, fx, etc. Then, when you have your video ready to go, you can just drag video into the empty events on the timeline as a take, and, bam! you're done! Everything is already set up for you.

I'm trying to do that, but I can't get the video AND the audio to drop in at the same time. I set up an empty event on a video track, and immediately below it, an empty audio event of the same size. I right-click and drag an .avi file (video and audio) to the empty video event, and choose "Add as take", and I get the video part, but not the audio. I can repeat the process and drop onto the empty audio event and get the audio.

In playing with the take stuff, even without empty events, I see that adding as a take never adds both the video AND audio at the same time. I swear it used to - and the funny thing is, the context menu gives you the option of adding the video only, or the audio only, implying that the normal course of events is to add both at once.

Has that take stuff changed in Vegas 5.0b? No matter what I try, I can't get it to add both the audio and video at once - I have to do it as two separate pieces.

Hmm....hadn't noticed that this wasn't working. And I'm not where I can check it at the moment. What happens when you load from Trimmer vs Explorer? Media Pool vs Explorer?

It didn't matter whether it came from the trimmer or the explorer or the media pool - in all cases, right-clicking, dragging and dropping onto the video event and picking "Add as take" from the context menu added only the video portion. Likewise, dropping onto the audio event added only the audio portion.

I tried resetting my preferences, but it did not help.

Ditto here in V5.

"As A Take" will only bring the Audio - if over Audio; OR Video if over the video - this from Explorer . .. Just repeated this in V4 . . same thing too. .

I read this 4 days ago and thought this would be real neat! . .. But it doesn't happen in V4.

Check where your cursor is as you are dropping the clip in the timeline.

I had this problem as well for a while, the icon showing the dragged clip makes it look like you are ready to drop the clip in, but if you are only on the audio track only the audio gets dropped.

I don't know if that is what's happening with you, but experiment having the cursor in different spaces when are stop dragging the clip. It was somewhat counterintuitive to me.

OK, I don't remember if when I had that issue if it was this most recent version of Vegas.

Yes, I am definitely having that same problem.

It's the same whether you add from the media pool, explorer or the trimmer.

Add as Take is acting like Add Video Only As Take or Add Audio Only As Take depending on whether or not your cursor is on the video or audio track.

This looks like a repeatable bug.

Yup! . . Wierd . .!

Same here. I didn't realize it used to add both, so thought it was just a limitation of the Take feature.

Sure would be a lot more convenient if you could add both video and audio together.

I think it is the "Empty" take business that is throwing me/us. I followed the Online Help for Add As Takes and what one does is to:

1/- "Select" a range of clips in Exp or MedPool

2/- "Bring" These to the t/l

3/- "Choose" add as takes - this places the first of the selection onto the t/l

4/- THEN right click and one can then select from the list of Takes WHAT you want - I don't see an option to do the same with the Empty event option. The only way I can see this happening is to add a "dummy" type of event - with the FX applied it - and have this, in itself, as "another" or the primary take . .. this is the only way I can se this happening . .. OR, I am completely incorrect and am willing to be corrected on all or so,me of the above! - uhUH?
