Adding a Transition

I know this is quite basic and i am sorry for that but i just got Vegas Video and dont know many hoops about it. I checked the help contents and they told me how to add in a transition. You know, you click and hold and then drag the transition into the area you want it but here is where i have the problem. The Help thingie says i will see this little picture (kinda looks like a "link" picture, like there joining) and well i dont see that and i only can put the transition before or after my clip and what sucks is i cant put the second clip right after that and so my transition never happens. Can you help me going through complete detail?

Hi Cody,

To make transitions, you might try activating the automatic crossfade button on the top toolbar... then by overlapping two clips in the same track (creating a crossfade) you can drag-n-drop any transition onto the crossfade.

To see your transition in action smoothly, set your preview window to "preview" quality, and drag the loop-selector (the blue highlight) above the ruler in the timeline to set a range spanning the transition and click the loop button below the timeline.

When you play the timeline the highlighted area should loop and play again and again. Each time it does, the preview will get smoother, until it plays smoothly at 29.97 all the way through. Another way is to "ram-render" or "Pre-render" the highlighted area... they should play smoothly too.

I myself just learned how to add transitions a few weeks ago, thanks to these people here, they've been very helpful. Anyway, I'll help you too based on my experience.

1. Go to Explorer (View/Explorer) and go the folder where you saved your video files.

2. Drag/drop you files on to the timeline.

3. Left-click your mouse and hold it and drag your 2nd clip to your left to overlap
your 1st and so on and so forth.

4. Go to Transition (View/Transition) for your effects and choose anything you want
and drag it to overlapped tracks.

5. Go to Preview and hit Play and Enjoy.

I hope I explained it well enough.

I strongly recommend that you take the hour or so it takes to go through the tutorial at the front of the VV manual. If you are playing with the demo, you can download the manual and tutorial files from SF. Once you have gone through that you will have a solid understanding of the basics of VV. It is a really good way to learn the program.
