Adding Chapter points to a track- for info purposes only.

I'd like to flag certain points of my timeline for a chapter point. I'm using TMPEGEnc to convert the rendered-avi to mpg and then VCDEasy to compile the resulting VCD. The last part is where I need to actually add the chapters.

I tried using Markers, but if I forget a point on my timeline and add it in later, my marker numbers will be out of sequence, true?

Markers are created using the next available number. For example, if you create markers 1, 2, 3, and 4, then delete 2, you will still have markers numbered 1, 3, and 4. If you then add another marker, it will become number 2, no matter where you add it in relation to the other markers. I am not aware of any way to "re number" the markers so that they are in increasing order across the timeline.

However, the markers still get rendered in timeline order when they are added as metadata to AVI, WAV or other formats. The numbering is just a special feature for the first 9 markers created (and those that replace deleted spots) for navigation.

Also, if you copy the position column from the Edit Details window, they will be in timeline order.

Is it possible to add chapter markers that will stay with the project when burning a DVD using MYDVD? MYDVD will only add chapters to projects captured through that program. I tried editing the project on Vegas, rendering and printing to DV tape then recapture with My DVD, I got chapters, but the quality was awful and unacceptable.

Can anyone give me advice on a DVD program I can use with my project edited & rendered in Vegas and make chapter points?

Depends what you want to spend

Ulead's Movie factory @ about $50
Dazzle's DVD complete @ about $99

For Pro features (more video , audio & subtitle tracks as well)

Pinnacle Impression DVD Pro @ about $400
Sonic Solution's ReelDVD @ about $1000

All should accept your MPEG-2 rendered files from Vegas (although some might want them as elementary video/audio streams). You can then add your chapter points easily in the authoring program.

I don't understand how you add audio and video as separate streams. Someone suggested I do this in MYDVD 3.0, but I can't see any options for that in the limited menus. When I burn the DVDs, I get audio dropped about halfway through the project.

It will depend on the authoring software's requirements.

A lot of higher end authoiring programs will only accept elementary streams, because it is possible to have upto 8 seperate audio tracks linked to your video track. Otherwise you would have to repeat your video track for each video track (language) & you'd never get it all on the disc.

Provided you have ensured the video & audio are the same length exactly & have rendered them out as seperate files, it is a matter of linking them together in the authoring, assigning them to the same start button.

Other programs however will insist that you bring in a multiplexed file. If they are to convert the audio at all then they will have to demultiplex it re-encode the audio & then build the VOB files that go in your DVD.

Be guided by the instructions (forums) for whatever authoring program you use. I haven't used MyDVD I'm afraid but I have used Sonic's DVDit in the past and it is best with that to bring in elementary streams (audio as a .wav file & video as .m2v) to save on the demultiplexing stage etc.
