Adding JPGs in 10d causes crash?

Kimberly wrote on 6/19/2011, 5:46 PM
Hello All:

I loaded 10d last week. In 10b (I skipped 10c) I had no problems adding JPG files to the timeline. In 10d it crashes every time.

I can open projects built in 10b that include JPGs, but when I try to add more JPGs, Vegas 10d crashes. I typically have one JPG in each of my projects. The remainder is HDV footage and a few FX. Maybe 10 tracks total.

Has anyone else experienced this with 10b? I have Windows 7, 32-bit.

Regards,

Kimberly

PS. I don't have QuickTime installed. Could this be the problem?

I can only answer your last question.
Loading JPG in Vegas does not use or require Quicktime.
The only still format that uses QT is TIFF afaik.

Kimberly, I run 32-bit 10d under XP Pro and have never had problems using or adding jpegs.
How large are the images?
Try converting them to PNG to see if that helps.
IrfanView (it's free) has a batch conversion utility that does this very quickly.

The images are small. Some were only 49kb. I'll try other formats to see if it makes a difference.

Mystery Solved!

If I try to add media to the timeline from the Explorer (JPGs or any other file), then Vegas 10d crashes. If I add the media to the project and then add it to the timeline, no problem.

So I cannot remember whether I was able to add media to the timeline from the Explorer in 10b . . . my projects are batch specific so I tend to add media to the project before adding to the timeline, but there must have been times when I added something from the Explorer as well.

Kimberly, that bit of sleuthing and observation is remarkable.
I think you should submit it to Tech Support right away as a bug report, and they should jump on it.
There should be no difference in any media import, whether from Explorer or Project Media, no exceptions allowed.

Your presence on this forum (I know you came from VMS) is about to become status.

I do a lot of videos containing up to 100 JPGs that are up to 12 Mpix and 3 MB each. Always drag them from the Windows Explorer and directly to the TL. Sometimes one-by-one and sometimes in a bunch. Also drag mp4, AVCHD etc. in sizes up to 759MB directly to the TL.
Every day.
Have never seen any issues doing this.

Bug report submitted. Here is the gist of the report:

I installed 10d last week.

Media bins are probably totally unrelated to my issue but it's the only thing I could identify as different. I do wonder about the buffer issue so I'm going to poke around with that although probably unrelated as well.

Thanks everyone for the input on this!

Kimberly

No way. I'll only have status when I actually know something. I'm still fumbling around, but steadily improving thanks to all the people here who actually do know something : )

I have a possible solution on my prior inability to add media directly to the Vegas 10d timeline using Windows Explorer.

I reported this problem to Tech Support on June 20. Below is a cut and paste from the update I sent to them today:

Greetings!

Strange, huh? I wish I had remembered to test the bug after I installed Media Manager and before the NVIDIA update.

I have always assumed that it is the number of pixels that is critical, not the filesize on disk when compressed. When loaded into Vegas, the image would be uncompressed

I was unable to add any media directly to the Vegas 10d timeline using Windows Explorer (however I could do this from the Explorer in Vegas). But the Vegas problem seems fixed for now, and I have not had the BSoD in over 48 hours. I am hopeful the old NVIDIA driver was the root cause.

Great stuff Kimberly.

We should really develop a checklist here and have it as a sticky "up-there" that can be added to as both hardware develops and VEGAS moves along.
