I was putting together a picture compilation for the first time in DVDA2 tonight and I noticed that it doesn't automatically create captions for you as DVDA1 did. I understand for most people that captions may not be of any use because it requires you to give meaningful names to your images - but I liked the idea (and I always give long descriptive names to my photos :-).
So, I got to thinking... with DVDA2 we've got subtitle support which is what I'd prefer the image captions to be anyway because you have the option to toggle them on/off. With that in mind I created a very simple command line utility to generate a subtitle text file from a folder of images (in the same format as region subtitles exported from Vegas 5).
The program lets you specify the folder containing the images, a search pattern (e.g. *.jpg), the duration of each subtitle event, the interval between subtitle events and the starting event position. Currently the order is fixed to ascending creation date (which for a digital camera is the order you took the photos).
So I dump all the images I want into a photo compilation folder, tidy up the file names, sort by date and drag'n'drop into DVDA2. Then I run my command line utility to generate the subtitle file and import it into DVDA2. Hey presto, perfectly synced subtitles with minimal effort.
Is this an issue for anyone else, is there already something built in that I've missed completely. Or does everyone simply create captions manually. I mean it wouldn't be so bad but when you have a hundred or so images it gets pretty tedious creating subtitle events or even manually creating a subtitle text file.
Thoughts or feedback?
