Adding text darkens my video

Hey there,
noob here so I hope I am just doing wrong something simple.
I have this video that consists out of three parts. A scene then some fading text on a blue background followed by the rest of the scene.
The scene is taped in the dark and its hard to see stuff allready. Now I want to cut out the blue background scene and add some text to the bottom. Something like copyright to be shown the entire movie. The problem is...As soon as I add text she video gets even more dark and you can not see anything anymore. The text also stays for just 5 seconds instead of the entire 40 seconds. I found a field where I can adjust this but nothing changes. Its like I have nine clips instead of two clips...
I would appreciate all the help I can get. I need it! :-)

I assume you are using Vegas 5 or 6 and not studio. I would make sure you are using the text with the alpha channel (grey checkered board pattern in the background). It sounds like you are using the text with the black background and maybe trying to fade them together.
Create another video track above the video footage. Place your alpha channel text on that track and it will simply overlay the footage without making the footage darker.

As for making it last 40 seconds, left click and hold the button while the mouse is over the edge of the alpha channel text clip and pull it. this will extend the length of your clip.

Thanks jrazz!
This makes it a whole lot clearer allready!
I am using vegas 6b and I think I was able to make the text lest 40 seconds now as supposed.
I did not even realize the layer system. I have three layers now though. On top video. In the middle sound and then on the bottom text. The layer on the bottom has all three symbols though so maybe it is allready joined? In media options I seem to have several options for an alpha channel . The default is premultiplied so I take it this is the correct one?

Never mind.
I reread your answers some more times and found what you meant.
I changed the layers around and now it is and it is supposed to be.
I am very happy. Thank you for helping me!
