Adding text, help

under1630 wrote on 5/29/2002, 12:15 AM
I'm new to this. I've run through the tutorial, and have edited my own video. There's one thing I can't seem to figure out. How do I add text? I've went to text/backgrounds and dragged a background past the event, then right clicked on the background and chose "Edit generated text". All it gives me is two lines where I can type in text, with no provisions for changing font size, just font style. I would like to be able to add rolling credits, but I just can't find the appropriate answers here or in the users manual that I downloaded from the web site.

you may have shrunk up the window too small. try expanding the text FX window and see if the other options are hiding.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried expanding the window. It now covers the bottom half of the monitor. I can now select font size, color and style. I can still only add two lines of text.

I'm sure you can add more than two lines of text, it may be that you only see 2 lines on the screen because of the font and size of your text. You should be able to add as many lines as you can fit in the video window and you can also change the alignment, position and add effects under the other tabs in the text generator.

If you position your cursor over the text box you are creating, you can view the text in the preview window while you are typing it. (Make sure you have on the safe zone button if end product will go to videotape).

Go to generated media and will open a pop up window, locate credit roll and select ok, you can then edit it with many different lines of text

These are illustrations of what the credit roll and text media dialog boxes should look like. If you don't see all the controls that are shown here, you will need to drag the dialog box out larger in order to see them.

under1630, once you get your titles in place or scrolling, you can also make them fade in an out by dragging the title on the timeline so it overlaps the events that come before and after, as long as you have your auto-crossfade feature on. I wish there was an easy way to make my title fade in and float diagonally (corner to corner) accross the screen. I was able to use the credit roll for that but it only floats straight up and down. I have a really nice opening to a wedding video that needs such a title. Anyway, I can live with the credit roll. Vegas neeeds better text features. Tonight I am going to try to moderate the speed of the credit roll using a velocity envelope. Should be quite an adventure. The project I am working on now has 15 different "save as" versions so I can revert to a past one at any time. Hey, and editor gotta do what an.....

You can have the titles move any direction you want using the event pan/crop. You can also use keyframe to have a title dissolve in and out by changing the opacity of the color of the letters. This effect is very easy to create but DON'T use the scrolling titles - use a regular title and modify its location based on keyframes.

2road,

You don't need to use velocity envelopes for speed control. Use the length box. It plays the credit roll from start to finish in that specified time. Keep in mind that the event must be long enough on the timeline or it will cut off.

GG,

Yes, I suggested Event Pan/Crop for just the reasons you said, 1) it CAN move an object around and 2) It doesn't require an extra video track just to move the title. I also suggested going away from the scrolling titles because he mentioned he wanted it to scroll diagonally and the built-in scrolling titles don't appear to have diagonal as an option. I can also see where Track Motion might be the better option as well.

My title will be on the screen a short time but I want to slow it down within that time. About an inch from the bottom of the "screen" it will begin to appear and then it will float (roll) upwards and fade out about and inch from the top of the screen. Problem is it moves a bit too fast. I am really not able to change the length of the title event because I have the fade-in beginning on a crucial note of music, so I figured the only thing I can do is to try to slow the title down within the small space it has. Would a velocity envelope be a bad choice on that? Thanks for the input.

GG,
When I stretch the rolling credit event, the motion does not slow down, it stays at the same speed and begins to repeat the credits.

GG,
Thanks. That worked perfectly. I've found there is a lot of trial and error involved in learning this program. The instructions and the users manual can be very user un-friendly at times. All-in-all though, a great program.
