Adding video tracks but without overlays

I know the subject might be confusing. WHen in college, we used Imovie2. When I had to add a couple video tracks, they would simply move over (in a sense) to allow the new track to be placed on the timeline. So no matter how many clips were on the timeline, others would shift out of the way to make room for the new clip. Well, in vegas, that isn't the case. If I have an hour of footage on my timeline, and see a clip that would go nicely in the middle, currently, I have to shift everything in order to stuff that clip in there. What am I missing here, I am sure there is a method to make all the clips NON overlays for the purpose of putting an additional clip in the center or somewhere.

Thanks

I believe what you are looking for is the Ripple editing feature. Click on the little icon with the 2 boxes and an arrow on top in your toolbar. Then you can move something in the middle of your video, and everything following that clip will move as well, and then you can add your new clip in the empty space.

Or you can use the insert time feature. Split the timeline where you want the inserted video to begin. You now will have two events. From the Menu Bar select Insert Time. Specify the LENGTH of the movie you want in the middle.

Your old movie will be the first event. You new video instered n the middle with be event two and everything at the point you splited will be shifted right and become event three.
