Additional Info Comparing File That Works & Doesn't Work

THE FIRST FILE WHICH IS A WEDDING PHOTO COMPILATION
WORKS IN DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 on the HOME THEATER SYSTEM

THE SECOND FILE INFO IS A TRANSFER FROM VHS THAT DOESN'T WORK
BUT THE FILES LOOK THE SAME (AC-3) etc.

Now i noticed one thing under Navigation: comparing the files,
one says TV System NTSC and the other unspecified. Now that's weird?
and also one says DVD and the other says MPEG, now what happened here?
I told it to do DVD on both.

The SECOND FILE with drive: D:\photobuild\My DVD
is the WEDDING COMPILATION - This one works fine Dolby Digital 5.1
on the Home Theater and on all 4 DVD players (it says DVD and TV System NTSC)

The FIRST FILE (VHS TRANSFER) with drive G:\ and TV system Unspecified
is the one that does'nt work. It also says MPEG rather than DVD

I've created 8 coasters on the first file trying to get AC-3 Dolby Digital 5.1
to work.

Hope this additional info helps.

Note the WEDDING COMPILATION was created using the original Vegas+DVD (no updates
to DVD Architect) while the VHS TRANSFER was after the patches.

I decided to move back the Surround Panner and noticed only
the left/right were working. Everything else set at -inf.

I'm going to try that.

then encode to AC-3 then import to DVD Architect.

I have figured out how to create mini-clips (in Vegas 4)
of my VHS transfer with AC-3 and burn to DVD
using DVD Architect and get FULL DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1
in the Home Theater.

How I did it (NOTE THESE FIGURES SEEM TO WORK BUT ARE NOT REALLY
TRUE DOLBY DIGITAL SPECIFICATIONS):
a. Use surround panner and set -10.6db for Left/Center/Right
b. Use surround panner and set -6.0db for Surround Left/Right
c. Set it so it shows add channels (0dB Center)
d. On the mixer, Front, Center 0.0db Rear is -4.6db

Next copy the exact same wave file to another timeline and change
from Surround Panner to LFE (set LFE 0.0db or just leave it alone)

My Home Theater has been calibrated with Avia DVD/Ultimate DVD Platinum
using Digital Sound Pressure Meter @ 77db A-weighted and other such
adjustments. System is 4 Q-series KEFs and 2 Center channel Infinity Alpha
Centers (1 for front and 1 for rear) for the THX-Select Kenwood x9060D amplifier
(6.1 setup). The subwoofer is Kenwood 505D powered.

QUESTION:
What are the correct Surround Panner settings for DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 Standard?
I've already read ALL THE WHITE PAPERS and documentation but I need to know
how the Surround Panner in Vegas4+DVD CORRELATES to the DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 Surround
and AC-3 standard so as when I render the AC-3 file it is properly done like
what the DVD Film producers/mastering process uses in hardware mixers.?

I don't believe this is a short answer, but some correlation should be available
unless the plugin AC-3 does it all automatically? HOWEVER, it doesn't because I had
to go into the Surround panner and move things around from the default (orange dot stuck on the center channel rather than down in the seating position, closer to the rear channels and centered) in order to get anything resembling Dolby Digital 5.1 surround out of my Home Theater.

Please advise.

What you are doing here is not creating a surround dvd but simply getting your 2 channel source material to play out of all 5 speakers. This does not make the audio surround. The same way an old mono record played out of 2 speakers is not stereo. You could try and create a surround mix by adding fx or a differently equalized version of the original audio to the rear speakers, but this is not really very effective, and will not have trully unique sounds comming out the rears. No helicopters flying in from behind you for example. Take a look at your other post for a better explanation.

Yes that is true but I will bet that many Like myself want to just get the surround effect. We know that we are not going to get five discreet channels from two stereo channels but we can at least add a little demention to it all with sound from the rear as well...

My problem is I am getting echo or delay between the front and back and tring to figure out how to get rid of it.
