Adjusting track audio volume: Advice needed

To adjust the sound volume in an audio track, the method I have used so far is as follows: Highlight the audio track; "Insert" "Audio Envelopes" "Volume" and this puts a purple line through the middle of the track. I have then double clicked on the purple line to create "anchor points" and then moved the line up and down according to the volume that I want.

This method works well, but it is rather slow to use and make amendments to. I have tried using the mixer and the volume faders, but although the sound volume varies according to the position of the fader, the changed positions are not recorded in the .veg file.

Can anyone tell me how the sound volumes selected in the mixer and the volume faders can be retained by the program and recorded as part of the veg file. Sorry about such a basic question, but I can't make sound volume adjustments "on the fly" as the project plays. Thanks for your help.

Regards, Fred

Are you using Vegas 5? If yes, click on the Automation Controls icon and click "Show Automation Controls." After that, your changes will be recorded and saved in the veg file.

Thanks Jonny for this advice. However, I haven't purchased Vegas 5 as yet, can anyone tell me the answer to this problem when you are using Vegas 4? What method do people use with Vegas 4 to adjust the audio volume of different parts of a sound track? Do you have to do it "manually" by adjusting with the mouse the purple line on the track that is put there with the "insert" "audio envelopes" "volume" command? How do you use the volume faders and the mixer to adjust track volumes so that they are recorded in the "veg" file?
