adjustment layer?

When working with child and parent tracks, I'm wondering if there
is anything comparable to an "adjustment layer" which is used
in photoshop and in after effects..?
The circumstance that i would like to use it in and the question
i have is for using effects on the parent to effect the child tracks...

In other words, if i have one parent track with 4 children tracks
underneath, i'd like to apply an effect to the parent such as color
correction and i would like all of the children tracks to be effected...
Is there a way to do this?

Thanks...

dvideo2, you can apply an effect to the parent at the track level, then toggle the pre/post arrow just to the left of the effect name in the Video Track FX window. Depending on its position, the pre/post arrow will apply the fx to just the parent track, or the parent and child tracks.

thanks for the responce, but that doesnt seem to be working....
I tried the general idea with an event and without an event on the
parent track.....ideally, for this situation, the parent track won't
have any events on it, rather, it will just be the "master controller".
....with that said, can i still apply an effect on the parent and have
it effect all of the child tracks below it?
I tried (as mentioned, with and without content on the parent) applying color corrector to the parent track and i did play around
with the toggle switch that you mentioned.......However, none of the
children tracks were effected.........where did i go wrong?
a little push in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.....
THANKS again....

You do not need to have an event on the parent track. I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. Perhaps it only works for certain effects. I just tested it with Levels and Gaussian Blur and both adjusted the child tracks. Try it with Gaussian Blur and see it that works for you.

To recap what I did:
1. Make media track(s) children to the controller track, all compositing modes are default Alpha.
2. Apply Levels and GB FXs to parent track (i.e., using Track FX, not an event on the parent track).
3. Toggle the pre/post arrow for each of the two FXs so it points to the right.

At this point you should see the effect being applied to the child track(s).
