Geeez, there are LOTS of kewl tricks using PS and VV. As for an overlay, if I understand your question correctly, just create an image in PS with transparency, when you bring the psd file into VV, the transparancy will be, well, transparent.

Also, when you have a still image (such as psd) on the timeline, if you alter the image in PS and save it, the change will automatically be come evident in VV.

Do some experimenting.

Everything you said can be done also with MACROMEDIA FIREWORKS!!

Of course you have to use what you've got.

Does Fireworks write multilayed files that can be imported into Vegas or do you have to save in a flattened format?

Fireworks is terribly addictive for me! So many things are so much simpler to do with it than with Photoshop when you work for multimedia...

2 tricks i use everydays:

1: work on a multilayer png with live effects, masks, etc. on any number of bitmap or vector objects with transparency and compositing effects, save the file (without flatening, closing or exporting anything!) in the state you like and use it directly in Vegas. Modify the current state live in Fireworks, save again, and see your changes updated in Vegas (wich remains completly stable!).

2: build a multilayer file, use frames to organise/view it in different states or variations and batchexport theses frames for your Vegas project.
