Patrick,

Last night I REALLY hammered (nicely but VERY firmly) Adobe's marketing manager responsible for Production Studio about the upgrade pricing. She looked a bit shaken afterwards.

I told her that the only way to avoid the lynch mob would be to offer a smaller upgrade bundle that doesn't duplicate what most people already have (Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 for example), at about half the price of the current $1,249 package upgrade.

She said they were going to have some serious meetings about this immediately.

My gut feel is that this new bundle will appear soon. There is an immense amount of anger on every board over this upgrade pricing idiocy.

On the Apple side, FCP's strength more recently has been film conforming, where the workflow was forced to actually work, after much pressure from film users taken in by Walter Murch's disgust with Avid and enthusiasm for a new platform that was nowhere NEAR ready when he started. It was all chewing gum and baling wire in the beginning, now it's quite solid. Just in time for film conforming being replaced with 2K and up DI (Digital Intermediate)...

I don't see the excitement over Universal Binaries. That's a crutch forced by their conversion to "the dark side" and doesn't do anything for the user other than tell them that eventually (probably) they will have an FCP running at native speeds on an evil empire chip. No capabilities added whatsoever, and it is in fact a big distraction for them. No pro machines with Intel yet, and consumer DeskPods (aka iMacs) aren't quite up to serious FCP work.

If I look at the tea leaves, it looks scary for Apple pro users. Yes, Apple has come out with a bunch of neat stuff over the years. Now suddenly it's all down to one FCP Studio bundle + Shake (ported from Win NT), and the company is transforming itself to become a manufacturer of consumer electronics for the living room (CouchPods?).

Thats awesome news about hopefully a new bundle at a lower cost. I think if Adobe doesnt respond quickly to its error, then will lose more of the marketshare they have.

Side note: I just received my instructors evaluation copy of the Adobe Premiere Pro 2 Bible and must say that thus far, its very informative for PP users. Though I will most likely stay with Vegas as the tool of choice for teaching I will at least have the ability to teach students to cut on other NLEs for the experience and if so, have a good instructing book to follow. Definitely worth the $50.

Logiquem,

You gotta give Adobe credit for putting most of their effort in this cycle into major workflow improvements, instead of just more snazz.

Many people verbally expressed their disappointment yesterday that this release wasn't more of a candy bowl.

Instead they found themselves with a plate of real working man's food. (I'm using the word "man" in the original, gender-free meaning here. It likely came from the word "manas" which means mind, whether male or female.)

Yes, Adobe's earlier attempts with Matrox were abysmal, real crash bait.

Their current Axio platform is reported by users to be rock solid and extremely capable. I was very impressed just spending half an hour with it. Seemed totally great for HD editing for many reasons.

AXIO looks nice but too expensive for my wallet. <sigh>
