AI background noise reduction (acoustic not hiss!)

paul-marshall wrote on 2/2/2025, 10:44 AM

Many of my videos involve people speaking in a noisy environment, so I have been testing AI voice isolation. Here is a test video, I would be interested what you guys think, and any other suggestions you have for better sound.

I'm using a Sennheiser MKE440 here which is stereo. I like the spacial atmosphere although of course the speaker is mono. It is pretty good front/back if I face away from the noise source, but in this case it is directed at the machinery too. I sometimes use a wireless lapel mic but that is omni-directional so picks up nearby noise wherever it is.
I am impressed at the way AI can totally remove unwanted background noise. So much so that it sounds unnatural without a little bit, if the source of the noise is visible.
Lalal.ai will separate the voice and the noise into two streams so I find by mixing some noise back in at a lower level it's much better that just the isolated voice. There are some settings that can be adjusted but artifacts do show up on the voice alone.

ElevenLabs voice isolation is better but doesnt provide the isolated background noise. However, it is good enough to be used on it's own I think. I still prefer a bit of background noise so my prefered option is to use ElevenLabs voice with a bit of background recorded without anyone speaking provided the fact that is not synced doesnt show up.

This is precisley the kind of AI assistance i would like Vegas to provide. Lalal say there is a VST plugin coming soon.

Thoughts?

SpectraLayers Pro and RX Advanced can separate and save both or all elements as files. Neither SLP or RX are free though. SLP is however included with the Sound Forge Pro Suite when purchased singularly and worth the upgrade price alone IMO.. If you have a version of SF already, you can get the upgrade discount.
I do not know if any of the 'free' vocal remover software can save both elements

@rraud I've tried Spectral Layers in Sound Forge Pro Suite and never had much success with it. My understanding is that SLP is great for low level hiss and hum reduction using a noise print. That was with SF Pro version 15 when I tried it so maybe it has improved. Maybe I wasnt using correctly but it was difficult to use, whereas the AI online services are simplicity itself and very effective. Any such options cost money though and ElevenLabs is $5 a month subscription minimum. With Lalal you buy credits which is a better option for occasional use.

Ultimate vocal remover. Free and one of the best. And I think the best free automated tool for this.

But I also had very very good results with Moises.ai (20$/month).

Maybe someone can make script for automating UVR (Ultimate vocal remover) for Vegas? And maybe someone can tell best settings for it?

@Alex-Pitel I tried that one. Good for free but monthly price quite high for enhanced features for occasional use. Similar to Lalal, not as good as ElevenLabs. For instance, in the test sample there are people talking to the side. ElevenLabs take these out, the others dont.

That was with SF Pro version 15 when I tried it so maybe it has improved

SpectraLayers (SL) has improved substantially since the version that would have shipped with Sound Forge 15. SL10 introduced an excellent Unmix feature which has been significantly expanded in SL11 (the current version). The following highlighted area shows the unmix options:

After running Unmix, there are controls for mute, solo and setting volume for the unmixed layers. The following is Unmix Song:

The Unmix feature is like magic and completely different to the noise reduction process that you would have used in the older version of SL. Why not give SL11 a try with its free trial version: https://www.steinberg.net/spectralayers/

From MAGIX's website, Sound Forge Pro 18 Suite comes with SL11.

@Dexcon I tried the free trial of SL11 and agree it is much improved over the version I have that came with Sound Forge 15. However on Ai voice isolation it is nowhere near as good as ElevenLabs. It has a lot more features of course but I doubt i would use them.

@Steve_Rhoden I tried the trial of Acon Digital dialogue extract. I like that it is a VST pugin and has controls to balance voice and noise so wins hands-down on convenience. Quality is similar to Lalal (maybe they have the same engine).
I note Boris crumplepop doesnt even list Vegas as a host. Thats sad.
I'll add those trials to my demo video but I see nobody has viewed it - No matter, I thought it might be interesting!

Nothing sad about that, It does list "and more" on their website. And has tutorials on how to use crumplepop in Vegas Pro on their site... Works perfectly in Vegas Pro as a VST3 Plugin, with truly excellent results.

paul-marshall wrote on 2/3/2025, 9:23 AM

So I tested the trial version of Boris Crumplepop and agree yes Voice Enhance does work with truly excellent results as a VST. I never doubted it would - its Boris. I wouldn't want to be without other Boris plugins like Mocha. I know theres a lot included but at £12 a month sadly its too much for me.

Thanks for the suggestions - its opened up some other options for me to look at.
