Example: .wav to .mp3, adjust volume, then .mp3 to .wav, ...

Thanks but I'll keep doing it my way and keep the quality where it should be instead of compressing it to death :-(

Have you checked that this even works?
The mp3 gain tool sets a value in a mp3 tag. Actually not entirely useless for it's intended purpose which is to set the gain of the playout device. Of course that'll only work if the player actually reads the tag and uses it. I suspect many players don't.
Even so, Vegas is not a mp3 player and I have considerable doubts that it'll even read that tag much less do anything with the value in it.

Well, OK forget it then.

"Where does it say that?"

Sorry, that sounds somewhat "elitist" to me. Of course the name of the software has nothing to do with the people who post here :-)

I think you expect people who are not professionals .. to ask questions in a manner they have no understanding as far as something lesser than "best industry practice". For the most part you would need to know ahead of time that there *is* a better way to handle the problem before they can say "I don't need to to it the better way"

Everyone started out someplace. I doubt anyone went from zero to pro in one day. Some folks are happy with what they have. Other people get better hardware and software over time to get a better result .. and it may not matter if they get paid for it or not.

But just because they own the hardware and/or software does not mean they know how to operate them to the best industry practice, but many of them make a sincere effort to learn.

I think you are expecting too much of those who do not use Vegas to make a living.

Obviously it's absurd to expect anyone to know what they don't know. It's equally daft to expect someone responding to a post on a forum to know what you don't know either. On the other hand I think most people know they're just starting out or they have a budget. Not that had to say "I'm just starting out" or "I only do this for a hobby so I only have $.... to spend".

If you don't say something like that and you get a reply that's way over your head or budget I think it's a bit unreasonable to take offence. The risk then is that the working professionals who give up their time to help newcomers will not bother and that's when it does become elitist. There are elitist fora, this isn't one of them. Everyone tries to help everyone without prejudice. Getting a reply that goes way over your head should arouse curiosity, it certainly has for me, that's how I've learned and I've never bitten the hand that feeds me, even when I can't afford the meal or I have to swallow a bitter pill.

And look out for "smart people acting stupid", and "stupid people acting smart". The 4th percentile on both ends. The good stuff is in the middle somewhere.

Well stated, Bob.

Typically on this forum, someone with a good question will get a good answer early on. That was certainly the case in this thread. One could reasonably expect that to end it, after one or two followups or reasonable alternatives were posted, right?

Well not exactly. What happens in the Vegas Pro forums is that after the fact, a bunch of others who didn't have the chance to be first-responders jump in with vague, off-topic, redundant, inapplicable, or "me too" advice of their own. Again this thread (and even this post) are perfect examples of that!

I guess it comes with the territory since there are no active referees here. But as mentioned in my other post about forum civility, it is rather tame here, and even the occasional flame wars are usually conducted without all the foul language and name calling that is characteristic of some of the "open" media production forums.

The unpleasant exchange (on another site) I referred to in my other thread came about as a result of letting myself get hooked by someone who seemed to have all the answers (even for Vegas Pro, AviSynth, etc.), when it turned out he had no real experience or knowledge, had never actually edited or produced a video in his life, but had a very good memory for what he had read on the internet (videohelp and hydrogenaudio), and a knack for being able to take either side in a discussion in order to be the center of attention. He has made 400 posts on videohelp, almost exclusively offering advice, since joining there six months ago. I'm sure you know the type.

OTOH, there is nothing to stop someone from plunking down $39 for an entry level piece of Sony software, and posting to their heart's content on the Vegas Pro forums afaik. Maybe Sony should restrict access further, to the forums for the actual software a user has registered?

The point is that there will be some "over the top" responses, and there will be some totally ridiculous ones on the other end (and I've made my share), but maybe developing the savvy to be able to sift the wheat from the chaff is part of the overall learning process, too.

For the record, I want to state that I'm a registered owner of Sony Vegas Pro 9, and the last three versions of MSP, Cinescore (full version), Acid Studio 7, and to top it off, the latest edition of The Filmmaker's Handbook.

When Joshua "aired" his short not too long ago, and asked for feedback, it inspired me and I could feel his artistry and creativity flow via the visuals and music, no dialog was necessary.

The feedback he got was basically a few "gladhands", and a "pro" or two saying they couldn't keep watching it or sarcastically saying "Oh, you mean there was more?...".

That post speaks volumes about the status quo here, and precludes any "fresh blood" from staying.
