Analog capture limited to 360x240?

I am capturing analog video from my camera through a Hauppage WinTV card. After editing, I am rendering it to MPEG2 for SVCD. It appears that SVCD will let me record to a resolution of 720x480, but I can't seem to adjust the capture card to anything higher than 360x240. That seems like a waste of good resolution.

Is the 360x240 a limitation of my card? Of all analog cards? Of my Hi-8 tape (which I doubt)? Or is it possible I am just missing an adjustment somewhere that will clear the fog?

If it's my card, what can other cards do?

I too have one of these cards. I have given up on capturing with any of the methods that come with editing software. I now use VirtualDub. Has a bit of a learning curve, but gives fabulous results. I can now capture at exactly SVCD resolution and 25fps (PAL - does NTSC as well at exactly 29.97fps). I then apply sharpening and hue filters, and deinterlace. Put this filtered file into VF and editing is - as they say - a snap. I'm having a spot of bother at the moment getting good output to svcd - I get black bars down each side and I can't get rid of them - yet!! Still, early days, I've only had VF for three days!!!

I don't know if this will help or even applies to your situation, but I have an ATI All-in-Wonder card that has the same analog capturing cabilities. When I first got the card, which I installed in a Pentium II 450 Mhz machine, I was limited to capturing MPEG-1 360x240 resolution. But, when I upgraded to a Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz machine, the video card capturing software then presented me with a lot more capturing options (up to MPEG-2 720x480 resolution.) It seems the card senses the capabilities of your computer and will present only valid options.

Like I said, your situation with the Hauppage card could be totally different.

I got a tip that the problem is probably not the capture card itself, but the driver. That might be why "ralphied" saw the change in settings when he upgraded. I was pointed to the following site to get a new, improved driver. I haven't tried it yet, but will post again when I have tested it.
