animating media generator event vv4.

ushere wrote on 11/23/2004, 1:05 AM
i've rtfm, and for the life of me, i can't seem to keyframe a 'video media generator'. eg., take a noise texture (say fractal-smooth) and over say 10 seconds animate it by setting key frames.

i can't understand how to set keyframes for this event. no problem with any video fx, etc., which come up with a timeline by default.... but for generated media?

pretty please,

leslie

Probably one of the most usefull parameters is Progress. You can set a keyframe at the beginning of the event, then set another one at the end and change the progress slider. A little bit goes a long way.

ushere - Thanks for asking the question you made me wanna experiemnt again . . forgotten about the variations I can get with just this!

Kellsie! - Thanks for giving me a nudge in this .. Just now produced a kinda of Morphing from 3 sets of Presets plus adjustments ALL of the sliiders . works beautifully ...

HOWEVER! . . I've got 3 k/s. K/f 1 had LAVA; K/f 2 had SOFT CLOUDS; K/f 3 had STANDARD NOISE .. Now! Once I've used them I don't seem to be able to get the info as to what preset was at each K/f? Bug here? . .. What am I doing wrong?

Since the cursor sync is not available when using Noise Texture, how the heck to you determine what is happening when you change the controls in the fX dialog? It seems as though I must place the cursor in the main Vegas timeline at the location where I want to create a keyframe. I must then -- somehow -- get the cursor in the fX dialog at the same location. I then insert a keyframe and can see the correct results in the Preview window.

However, if I fail to remember to get the cursor on the timeline and the cursor in the fX dialog at the exact same position, then I don't get the correct results.

Other dialogs have the "sync" option, but this one does not. I can't find any easy shortcut for getting the cursor in the exact same location in both places (main timeline and fx timeline).

Am I missing something?

John, i don't think you are missing anything. On the other hand, this lack of sync is a known issue, i've never had a problem just dealing with it. I place the cursor manually on the editing timeline and on the keyframe timeline. It's never bothered me so far.

Actually, i find it nice that i can adjust a keyframe while previewing a different spot on the timeline simultaneously. This helps me see the effect of a keyframe change "down the road", so to speak.

Yeah, Kelly I'm with you . . I kinda "use" Vegas as me Palette and push, squish, squash, thwack and plop "paint" ( events: video or audio; FXs stuff ) where I feel it kinda works when I see it loopy looping on the ext mon . . when I get near to what I want - that's it! It's the way I work, and I guess it isn't for all .. . for what Vegas does in this area of flexibilty I just love it! . .

I knocked up this morphy thingy in ooooh .. about 1mins! Yeah, slack eh?!?

It sure is easier, however, when doing keyframing with fX or pan/crop. In both cases, as you scrub on the timeline in the dialog, you can see what is happening in the preview window. Also, if you enable the sync cursor option in those dialogs, you can be absolutely certain that the position where you are about to add a keyframe is truley the exact position of the cursor. Without this sync. I too often find myself over-adjusting a setting because the preview cursor is actually between keyframes, and therefore the changes I am making are being averaged at that point with the settings from the previous keyframe. Of course, when I playback the entire event, the mistake becomes immediately obvious, but what a stupid waste of time!

Since one can turn off the sync cursor in those dialogs that have it, my vote would be to include it in ALL dialogs. Anything that is inconsistent between similar functions does nothing except confuse users, especially those that are half brain-dead, like me.

thanks, but i still don't see how i can get a 'progress' bar for, say, fractal noise.

put simply, if i drop a media generator (fractal) onto the time line, then want to edit it WHERE do i set key frames if there's NO progress bar as in say, video fx, below the editor?

could someone take pity on my beffudled old brain and point me as simply as possible in the right direction, preferably, step by faltering step,

as they used to say in the late 60's

love you all, you've ben a great audience,

OH NO, not another manual,

My guess is that you don't have the Media Generator window opened up to it's full size. Stretch it out farther and you'll see more controls, including Progress and the keyframe timeline.
Grazie wrote on 11/24/2004, 12:14 AM
If you can't see a line that says "Progress" then, as Kelly says, you need to pull open the MedGen window further , .. we've ALL been there . .you're in good company Pal!

i must be missing something very obvious, and obviously not making myself very clear (comes of being downunder) - i can see the progess bar, etc., but unlike pan/crop, motion, etc., if i drop a cloud generator, fractal etc on the timeline, how do i keyframe it since it doesn't have a keframing box like motion/pan/crop?

or do i have a ghost in my system?

i'm sorry if i'm being plain dense about this, but then again, i do have the excuse of age...

thanks one and all,

leslie

or should i rephrase it and ask how do i modify keyframes for a media generator event - if i can't see / find keyframes in the first place.....
Grazie wrote on 11/25/2004, 1:28 AM
" . .how do i keyframe it since it doesn't have a keframing box like motion/pan/crop? " .. oh ...

Try undocking the whole Video Media Generator. Stick it in the middle of the screen. If you really can't see the T/L for the FX you're doing, then I guess you DO have it "squashed" out of sight.

You say you can't see it? Yes? Well very slowly and carefully "roll" the mouse cursor over the bottom BLUE Border of the FX Menu Screen. You will see a kinda Expansion "Equals Sign" with Arrows pointing Upwards and Downwards - yeah? Well, once you've got this showing LeftClick+Hold and pull/drag up .. you SHOULD see the T/L slowly appear .. Yeah I know .. I've been there before .. I've forgotten this and THEN come here to be reminded too! . .I bet your system aint at fault .. Give it another go and come back hee . .yeah?
