Another dumb 5.1 question.

I have 12, 5.1 tracks and want to route all the info to LFE as the tracks
all have misc. info on them. If I make 12 more empty tracks and copy and paste the corresponding track to the empty track then change the once empty track to LFE will that put all the LFE info together without screwing up the high end of the original tracks?

It shouldn't be a problem, but why not just render to a new track as a WAV, then route that to LFE? It would take much less processing power durring final render. :)

OK. Thanks

In case you really are dumb ... :-)

(Actually, we prefer to use the word "ignorant", since that says nothing about innate intelligence and only concentrates on the fact that we have more to learn.;-)

Why are you trying to route all the info to the LFE? I hope its not because you think that's how to drive the subwoofer. If so, look at my previous dumb post. The key issue being "leave that LFE channel empty unless you're making Earthquake."

Well, when there was nothing in it I figured something had to go in it.
Essentially only one of the 12 tracks had music and all the others were
misc voices and boom boom sounds. So I wasn't aware that the LFE channel would be automatically filled when rendered. I really could use a highly detailed explanation on what is automatic and what isn't. Should I just ignore that channel?

Or you could create an auxilliary send and set it as an LFE, then you'll have total control over how much of each track is sent to it.

Also, by using the volume envelope on any given track, you can lower its unaffected volume to zero, while sending its audio to the LFE Aux Send.

Oh... the above three posts appeared while I was still typing this.
It'll still work though. In fact I wish I'd done this with a few tracks in my last project rather than setting up tracks that were only LFE and not on a send.

JohanAlthoff:
I checked the link and thats all well and good, but it doesn't tell me
how Vegas treats the LFE , weather it is automatically filled during render or you have to use it manually or if it is used at all. Since there
was no volume indication prior to render I assumed you had to add something to it.

As I understand it -

LFE = Low Frequency Effects (ie earthquakes).

the 5 speakers in 5.1 are all full range (in theory)

the .1 speaker is low end stuff only, and audio has to be sent to it specially if wanted. (and incidentally, uses lower bitrate as it cuts off around the 120Hz mark - another reason why AC3 reduces file size)

5.1 is not like a stereo audio setup with two satelite speakers and a sub, where the sub is there to extend the overall frequency range reproduced.

However, there are no rules to say you can't put anything you want through the LFE, if you want to push the low end a bit.
