Another FasTrak 66 RAID Bites The Dust

WilliamB wrote on 4/30/2000, 4:59 PM
After getting all excited about the FasTrak 66 IDE RAID, I
bought one and two DiamondMax Plus 40 drives. Like some
other posts I have read here, I did not notice *that much*
track count improvement on my dual processor NT 4.0 PC. But
what was worse, sometimes "out-of-the-blue" the RAID array
will just go offline. Often times it happens after 8-9
hours of use. Otherwise my PC is rock solid. So, I am
pulling the whole thing and going 10K RPM, Ultra 160
Cheetah.

Would anyone care to tell me that I am doing the right
thing? :)

I use a BP6 with two Celeron 466 (not overclocked), 384 MB
RAM and NT 4.0 SP5.

Thanks!

Hi william
Im using the Ultra 160 AND LOVING IT!! and I used it on a PII 450,The
problem was my track count went through the roof but my CPU was now
the week link in my system. So im running a PIII 800E.If you can get
the Cheetha Ultra 160 drive w/the on board 4mb of buffering and the
Adaptec 29160,because it has 2 SCSI ports on the one PCI board,1 for
Ultra 160 and the second for SCSI-2.DO NOT put your HD and lets say
CDR or CD Rom on the same SCSI bus. This will slow down your drive.Put
that stuff on the SCSI-2 port. Also I don't know how much ram you have
but RAM is GOOD.
Good luck

George, Thanks so much for the input!

I was planning on an 18 GB Cheetah with the 4 MB buffer and a 29160.
Since I record in the same room as the PC, I was thinking about:
1. Removing all IDE hard drives from system.
2. Put (2) SCSI drives in external enclosure in a closet 15 feet away.
One drive for operating system (SCSI 2), one for audio (Ultra 160).
3. Get ultra quiet power supply from PC Power & cooling.

Thanks again for your advise!

Bill

Hi Will
I was told by someone at Adaptec, sorry I don't remmber the name
because I got my system before it came out a few months back,But you
want the shortest cables possible with the ultra 160 stuff. We are out
fitting the other two studio's this weekend with the same set up you
are talking about but Tony and Ron only ordered I beleave a 1ft cable
so they can take their drives to the main room. You should check into
that.Take Care and Happy tracking
