Another Feature Request...

As I type this, thunderstorms are popping up everywhere in our area and big cell is headed our way. For some reason, the power likes to go out in our neighborhood whenever the clouds turn gray :) I am in the middle of a render that has been going since 6am this morning and still has 12 hours showing that is left. I would like for there to be a way to pause a render, be able to shut down my machine, let the storms pass and the power come back up and then restart Vegas and pick up right where I left off. This would be extremely helpful for me. Another bonus would be if there was an error you did not lose everything that was already rendered and you could pick back up from where you left off. I know this is possible with some files (avi) but why not all?

That happen to me last night during a render. Luckly is was just a 10 sec outage. Battery back up save it. Yes a pause redender would be very useful.

Yep. I put this in as a feature request several years (and versions) ago. No sign of it yet.

It would also be very handy for those using laptops out in the field who never know when their next battery charge is coming. A render pause would let these folks render whenever they have power and eventually finish the job even if they have to shut down at some point.

I've always wanted a pause render too. It's amazing how 20 minutes left in a render you NEED to get on your PC to burn a DVD for someone else. :)

I think AVI saves part of the render if it's cancled.

A workaround for this could be to make multipe regions & render out each region via batch render. Then worst case is you loose the part you were currently rendering.

Generally i never have a problem using my computer for something else while rendering. Just last night i was burning a DVD and capturing from my camcorder while having two renders going simultaneously.

ohhh.... you've got bigger balls then me. I wouldn't render, capture AND burn. :) Just two of the three!

Actually render, capture, burn, and render ... all four at once. And also including Word, probably 8 or 12 browser windows open, several SSH sessions, instant messengers, and probably Spider Solitaire too.

One thing that a lot of folks don't realize is that while rendering is a very processor intensive task, it's also a very polite one. It gracefully steps aside to let more time critical applications run. It just eats up all the spare cycles left over after everything else has their share.

How do you do that with the processor running at 100% most of the time? With mine it's like waiting for a Chicago train that's a day and a half late.

I got use to Premiere that didn't let you even browse your HD while rendering. :)Vegas is very polite. Heck, one time jsut for kicks & rendered & ran an OpenGL game at the same time to see what would happen. The game was just a bit slower.

James, it's an ancient Chinese secret, but i'll let you in on it. I start all those applications and let them run. There ya go, now you can do it to.

Now, to be safe and a little snappier, i usually set VidCap's priority to above normal while capturing/printing and Vegas' priority to below normal while rendering. It's usually not necessary, but it does make things flow a little smoother.

So, how about this "pause" feature?
I would really like to know what the Vegas developers think about it.

I've started a rendering (about 3 hours ago) and it's at 8%
Power went out last night (I live in a country where +14hours power outages are quite normal) and looks like it won't come back for sometime.
I'm running with a power inverter which, luckily, will last about 4 hours more.

...so... a "pause rendering" button would be ideal.

Has anyone tried putting the computer to hibernate?
I will try it (since I have no other option) and I'll post back the results.

I haven't actually switched to version 7 yet (still doing stuff in 6.0d) but even a generic pause (not for continuing after a power off - just so I could run other stuff) would be a welcome feature - All I can do now is let it run (and run nothing else - older box blues) or cancel entirely.

Those folks who aren't scared of the command line might consider trying this:

OK, so you'd need to look for the right thread and I'd experiment before attempting to pause in anger on a large project,......

I'll try it myself this weekend. To give you an idea of how much effort went into this post! :)

I'd expect one of three results:

1. It works.
2. It doesn't work.
3. It appears to work and then Vegas comes up with an error when you've not paused the right PID or the right number of PIDs. So it is nearly useless.
