Another Premeire Feature Needed - PSD layer import

thread wrote on 6/6/2007, 1:23 PM
Much like the user in the post I sole this title from

Unless I have overlooked something, which is quite possible, another feature we need importing a series of still images all at once.

I am not referring to the "import as series" check box for a series of similarly labeled images, which create one long clip. I am talking about the feature in Premiere that imports the layers from photoshop files as separate images into the time line. This is a very handy feature and saves a great deal of time from saving each layer as a separate image (PNG) and then placing each image into the time line separately.

Thanks

There must be some sort of IP or copyright issues in implementing this feature. Otherwise it seems like a no-brainer and would've been implemented versions ago.

Well, DVDA has layer support. Im wondering if the license cost is more to use it in Vegas or if Sony just hasnt thought of it important enough.

Yes this would be nice.

There are ways to ease your pain a little. If you select a stack of images and righ-drag them to the timeline you'll get three choices: add as takes, add accross time, add accross tracks.

The trick is to get the stills out of a PSD as single images. There is a script in CS2 for that or I *think* that Imageready can also handle that.

Of course it'd be best if updating the PSD file would also update all the stills that are on the timeline. And for that you need Vegas to actually read the layers.

aside form the need to convert PSD's to PNG's you CAN do this with vegas..
Once you to your batch conversion (dead simple unless your doing massive projects) al u need to do is open explorer, hightlight the range of images then drag those to the timeline..

However, what i would like to see, is a straight imort of PSD layers and once imported, you can switch across through each layer using the "takes" function
Hit t and it switches layer..

Extending from that, i would like to see PSD options for this, where a "composite" can either be created as a "take" or is automatically generated across as many timelines (depending on how many layers there are.
eg, import a PSD into an empty vegas timeline. Vegas sees 6 layers, so 6 timlines are created, each one overlapping the other. save as veg, reimprt veg as a nested project, voila.. instant action..

the other option. would be import as one clip with a series of "takes" ie one take for each PSD layer..

simple conecpt yeah?

I kind of do that now for titles and wording that I want to line up.
I create a base "title" layer in CS3, then duplicate it change the text or paste it from a word documentetc..
Use the export layers as files script in CS3 the like mentioned above import the sequence either as takes, across t/l or tracks depending on the use.
But it would be nice to import a psd and be able to control the layers over time. Now I just add them accros tracks and manually adj each layers length if its an adittive or subtractive effect.
