Another Print to tape question

Lili wrote on 1/17/2006, 9:33 AM
I used to be able to print to tape with no problem (seems most of my posts begin with this phrase!), but now it doesn't work.

Question is this: After I capture from my camera and save, and before I close the file, a dialogue box comes up that asks "Save changes to Default .sfvidcap?". I used to say "yes" to this, but after something I read in the posts at one time (???) I have been checking "No". Could this be the reason? Use V5.

If it is, is there any way I can print the files to tape that I did not save to the default.sfvidcap?

Hope this makes sense. thanks all.

The sfvidcap file will have no influence on PTT. You SHOULD save them as they make recapturing easier. But they're not required and definitely not needed for print to tape.

Perhaps if you could elaborate on what is happening...

I follow the Vegas online help for "Printing video to DV Tape from the Timeline" and all is OK up until I reach a certain point, but before I go on with a long explanation, could you please confirm that the camera should be set to the Record mode and not the VCR mode? I have tried both ways and neither way works, but having it in VCR mode doesn't make sense.

The instructions say to put it in VTR mode, which I assume must be record mode?
thanks again.

The camera should be in VCR/VTR mode (they're the same). Put it in the mode where you would PLAY a tape - Not the mode where you would press the red record button to record through the lens.

Some cameras require a menu setting be changed to have firewire IN instead of firewire OUT.

Thanks jetdv - that was one less thing for me to mess around with when trying to figure out what the problem was.

I now have everything working smoothly and it's very quick and straightorward. It must have been that I had the wrong camera setting for starters, and then the other thing had to do with rendering the file to .avi, instead of selecting avi clips from the media pool and trying to capture those.

One thing I still wonder about, although it's not a problem, is why does it re-render my .avi file before it prints to tape, when the file is already rendered to avi format?

Thanks for all your help:-)

Oh noooo - I THOUGHT everything was "working smoothly" as I said in my last post, however, today when I went to add a video to the tape I'm backing up my videos on, it was b l a n k!

I'm sure it's the correct tape - it was properly labled with the names of the 5 files I had transferred.

I tried printing another file to tape as a test this morning and, as before, I could see and hear the video on the camera's LCD screen as it was supposedly printing to tape. Again, the video was blank afterwards - in fact, when I hit the rewind button, it was already at the beginning of the tape so it looks like it didn't even transport in the camera. I tried with 2 different cameras, and it still does not work.

I've now lost forwever the 5 videos from last time, since I assumed (yes I know that word applies to me - I feel like an ass for assuming and not playing back and testing the very first video, but all seemed to be going well.)

What stupid thing did I do or fail to do? Anyone care to venture a guess? Almost too embarrassed (there's that word again) to post this, but here it goes........
